Its one thing to have problems that crop up for a family business or any business for that matter that will take time to address, it is quite another thing to keep cashing the checks as they come in knowing that you wont be able to fulfill the order in a timely manner and without letting the people know who are sending them the checks before they cash them. No excuse for that.

I was just going to say what HeyJoe said: from what people are reporting here and elsewhere, the checks sure don't have any problem finding them! And, again from reports here and elsewhere, there appears to be plenty of time to open the mail and take checks to the bank . . . if not to return calls.

Honestly, I'm shocked that no one from the company has replied to this thread (or to the one I saw on rugerforum.com) to explain what's up. While the company wasn't especially businesslike back when I bought T-grips from them in the late '80s for the shop that I managed, someone always answered the phone.

I also share this sentiment. I know nothing about these folks, but I do know they're not doing themselves any favors by continuing to cash checks while remaining incommunicado.

When I needed another T-grip a few months ago I chose to go the eBay route when I couldn't get anyone on the phone.

This is quickly turning into the Lawman Leather situation, with growing numbers of disgruntled customers out of pocket and nothing to show for it. In both cases, the vendors had no difficulty taking money from buyers, only to renege on the delivery of ordered goods. It's a shame that so many people in our shooting fraternity have been ripped off this way.

See post #89 above. In short, AG hasn't shut 'em down but has received lots of complaints. People are being referred to the Post Office.

How do you spell M-a-d-o-f-f? The amounts are very different, but the ethics and principles are identical, it seems. Tragic.

Default another dis-satisfied "customer"

I've posted this here on S&W forums and over on the Firing Line, so I won't weigh you down with specifics. Suffice it to say that I paid Tyler Mfg. $68.75 in Oct. 2010 and still have not received the product nor even a response to a certified letter I sent them in Jan. this year.

That in my book is Postal fraud, and I urge everyone who was burned by this company to fill out the USPS complaint form as soon as possible. Before any other people send in their hard-earned money and get burned as well.

The thing that really burns me up is that over the last 15 years, I've completed dozens of purchases with firearms related companies over the internet, and even made a few sales via the auction sites. And I was never, ever burned. Not once. Until now.

The firearms community IMHO is close-knit, and honorable bunch. And I've definately gotten more from my interactions with you all via the web than I have given back. That's why the betrayal of a venerable old company like Tyler's Mfg. & Dist. Co. hurts even more.

I attended a gun show in Oklahoma City over the weekend. I asked one of the larger venders if the Tyler T Grip Company had been showing up at any of the shows?

The gentleman informed me that the Tyler T Grip Company was out of business.

Take it for what it's worth. But I'd not be sending any funds to the Tyler T Grip Company. Hopefully, someone will revive that fine old company.

I tried calling their number in the past: no answer; and today, a stock computer voice message says "Hello, we are not available now. Please call again." No way for one to leave a message. Not that they would answer it anyway.

I wondered why no one responded to my WTB a set for my J frame. I glimsed right over this thread and never knew folks were gettting a raw deal. Quite the bummer as I sold 4 or 5 of them off in the last 6 months. One for my model 34:!

I wonder why my Merson's and Pachmayr adapters aren't bringing rain, too?

Dang, and I was hoping to retire early.

I fail to understand what is so freaking complicated about these things? Honestly, any patents must have run out decades ago, why doesn't somebody just start making them? What am I missing here?

Let's get it straight....owner took sick and died this past fall...he had let things slip, and his kids WERE somewhat preoccupied with losing their father after a lengthy illness....his kids are getting the biz up and running, including relocating and opening a new shop, which also meant EVERYTHING packed including orders, correspondence, etc........they all have full time jobs....the move is completed, and they are making and mailing adapters as batches happen in a half finished shop....brushed are ready and shipping, anodize and or polished ones need another obvious step before shipping....my check was cashed last OCT...they are snowed under and beg patience, if they wrote a letter to everyone they would be getting nowhere...they have zero internet savvy and had to get a local college prof just to do the move update on the site....keep your fingers crossed they pull this off and rumor mongering is NOT helping...they are getting old phone number moved to new facility, which is a hassle with different outfits, and if you want them to get work done, don't expect them to answer calls...we are talking about a 2-3 person outfit here, not a factory, the son and his sister who is also in school!

Just a PS....cannot believe all the garbage posted in this thread....you know, i sent them a check last fall, and a month or two back just wrote a nice letter asking if they were still in business and included my phone number and the son called me straight away from his personal cell phone, the toll free number being very hard to get moved for people who know nothing about their dad's business....that's all it took, folks....and you folk spreading all the garbage should be spending as much time spreading this news as you did in trashing them....if they don't make it, you can be proud you helped

Yes, let's get it straight. Legally. Cashing a check before mailing the goods is not right.

Would everything work out better if they just didn't cash the checks?

At least they would not be suspected of fraud. Or charged with it eventually.

And I think that it was about three years ago that I first got that "the original owner just died and we're his kids trying to pick up the pieces" story. They had profound difficulty returning phone calls back then as well, as I recall.

So much of customer satisfaction can be accomplished with customer contact. As I've mentioned up-thread a couple of times, it's too bad no one from the company has taken the time to respond to this thread . . . or to update their site . . . or to return calls . . . or to ship product.

Well, I said earlier that I sent them a check about a month or so ago for a pair of T-grips. If I get them sooner or later, fine. If I don't, it ain't the end of the world.

mtngunr,
I dealt with a lot of mountain bike parts companies in the '80's and '90's that had the same pattern. They cashed your check, had all sorts of sad stories and excuses, and after 20 years, they still have my money. I'm sorry Melvin died, but if the kids can't run the business in a manner that is not breaking the law (which is what they're doing now) I have no sympathy. Bottom line, they are a business, and buisnesses that don't deliver a product die. Usually the owners of buisnesses that rip people off go to jail.

1. Taking peoples money and not delivering parts is fraud. Lame excuses, like ignorance of the law, is no defense.

2. If they can change the website to tell about their move, they can change the website to tell customers what is going on (and tell customers to stop sending money until further notice).

3. In this Obamaconomy, people are not going to be very tolerant of anything that seems like a rip off. Money is too hard to come by nowdays.

it always amazes me how there are always a few that turn it around and make the bad guy out of the people whose check was cashed and did not receive the merchandise they paid for or an explanation or estimate of time it will take to get it. If you cant deliver the goods, dont cash the check its as simple as that.

I don't think any one here has said that they are following good or even acceptable business practices. Events have happened that were outside of anyone's control (I'm assuming it was natural causes and all).

The banks these days will not cash old checks so if it might take four months to get your product done there would be an additional delay for you to write another check.

We are talking about $25 or so here, not $100, not $1000. It sounds like this is a mortal sin that has been committed against you, your family and village.

I'm not agreeing with what was done, but I do think the report from a respected member should allow a bit breathing room for them.

Couldn't they just have declared bankruptcy against the estate and most people here lost some where between $30 and $100 USD? If you ordered from GE or Apple, yeah, go for the gusto. It's a small family business that used to be the bread and butter of the US.

I'm not saying it was right, it was bad. But how many people called (or emailed) and asked how long it would before he (Mr. T.) got to making that order before it was placed? I do that with every order I place with a small company like this. And you know I have been told 15 weeks at the earliest and I still placed the order. At 14 weeks I will reach out to him and ask how things are going, but the fact that it's 15 weeks tells me it could just as easily be 20 or 30. Another home brew sell said it would be 8 weeks and it was 5. Heck, I even have learned to call Amazon to check for better delivery times and vendors.

When you are working with a young agressive go-getter company you are apt to get better service. When you order from a person who is not as agressive, perhaps retired twice and using the profit for paying for insurance or grandkid presents it might not be as fast.

If you want only perfect then order through a BIG
company and you get what you can get for the price you can get it. If you want something special, niche oriented, then do your research, make a call or three, send an email and buy from a point of knowledge. The interent has allowed thousands of these little niche places to reach more people, it's wonderful. While it's not perfect it's pretty good when you use your noodle a bit.

A death in the family is never easy for the family and for a family business it can be even worse depending on how much preparation there was to carry on the business not to mention taxes, creditors, etc.

Perhaps, since they seemed to have had a backlog of work already the family should/could have suspended further orders until they were able to deal with things appropriatley and fully with regards to the move and completing those orders already taken and paid for?

Hopefully they will get things turned around and continue production for many years to come.

Wow. Maybe I should pull my practically new black polished T grip off of my M40 and post it up.

About a two years ago I ordered ten T Grips from Tyler. A couple of months and I had them. The daughter was running the operation with a Hispanic Man manufactoring the grips.

Ol' Melvin died several years ago, not a short time ago.
Sounds like a good story to me, how the greiveing family can't just get it right. Remember the 7 P's of Management.

mtngunr, sir I glad that you have been so pleased with the service you have received, but it appears that a vast majority of folks are not pleased with the service or lack of from the company in question.

As you appear to have an inside track on the problems Tyler is facing, do you have any idea when they will be back up to speed?

Default Tyler Grip....

I don't know if this will help others in the future, but I took this off of their site as per payment. Notice that they only accept: PERSONAL CHECK, MONEY ORDER, CASHIER'S CHECK.

That should be your first clue. If they accepted CREDIT CARDS you could cancel the payment, but once they have your CASH, you are at their mercy, you have no recourse. The AG isn't going to get too excited over someone losing about $50.00, but if they would get a hundred or so complaints, I will guarantee you they will sit up and pay attention. SO, START WRITING. I've been in Law Enforcement for 42 years plus, so I kind of know how things work and I'm sure you other guys out there in Law Enforcement would agree with me. I'm sorry, but death or no death, I just can't accept that for a reason. HOW MANY GUYS OUT THERE SAW THE TYLER GRIP THAT SOLD ON E-BAY LAST WEEK FOR $255.00? THAT'S RIGHT $255.00. If you need the link to find it, just let me know, it's still up there. I apoligize if I offended anyone, I didn't mean to in anyway or form....CookE

THIS IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TYLER GRIP ORDER FORM:

Check or Money Order #________________________________________ Amount $_______
WE DO NOT ACCEPT CREDIT OR DEBIT CARDS. Please do not send this information.
Only acceptable methods of payment are: personal check, money order, cashier's check.

I find it hard to believe that they make to order. Why on earth cant these be made and kept on a shelf to sell. These are cheap items as far as manufactured items go, they arent jet planes. They arent custom ordered, non one specifies sizes or the like. Just a model and color they only have a few choices. Keep a retail value of $10,000 or $20,000 on the shelf. Run the factory to replenish stock. What do I know, after almost 30 years in manufacturing...

What business can survive like this, none.

How are they making this, by hand, 1920's machinery/ technology?

Elves?

Maybe I should bring some over to China later this year.

The Telvin Myler C- grip, snazzy name?

Some folks on this board seem to know the family or at least how to contact them.

Please ask them for all of us to somehow communicate their intentions as a business.

We all look at the website and read about the new facility. Great. Is this move done? Is manufacturing starting up again? They had time to update the website to say this but not to let customers know if the company was up and running again?

We all look at the website and read that the phone lines will be open certain times so we call. And call. And call. No one answers and there is no way to leave a message. How about putting a message on the phone line that tells customers or potential customers what's going on?

It is their own fault that their once good name is being bashed on boards across the internet. Because they really have not tried at all to answer their customers inquiries.

My sympathy for them is very, very thin. I sent them another letter today with a copy of my order form and cancelled check. Hopefully they will respond. If not, then my only recourse is to file a postal fraud complaint.

It's a shame all the way around.

I own several sets, but refused to hand them my money before they made 'em, fearing this would happen to them one day. So, instead I bought them from stocking dealers (D&G Gun Shop and "Superman" on this site's classifieds. They are now out of the Tyler business of course.

I truly feel bad for the folks waiting for their T-grips . . . and the current owners of Tyler have long spent their money just getting by with bills day-to-day. When will the day be when they finally either give up and move on to other jobs to make a living, or get arrested and shut down?

Someone needs to buy them out, lock, stock, and barrel. Even if the current owners survive, they are ill-prepared and under-capitalized to make a go of this business.

I've read through this entire post and I'm trying to figure out who this "respected member" is that you refer to above.

The only explanation offered was by mtngunr who joined five days ago.

Several individuals have attempted to contact the company with no luck. One individual went to the trouble of actually sending a certified letter.

Mtngunr says the new owners are not Internet savvy, yet they are able to keep a Web site up and running?

If you place an order for something and someone takes your money, I think you are entitled to an estimated time for delivery. Yet no one, except mtngunr appears to have gotten a response from anyone who claims to work for the company.

So let's ask the group, would anyone out there NOT purchase a T-Grip or T-Shoe if it was made in China?

I probably wouldn't. Really! One concern would be quality.

It's just not that hard to do it right.

You don't take orders and cash checks for orders you can't fill.

If you foul up, you reach out and communicate rather than hiding.

There really is no excuse for this conduct at this stage. It is unethical and immoral. It's also criminal, literally and legally.

And, if I get myself into a situation like this, I hope my friends will tell me the truth so I can see the way to get myself on the right path, rather than telling my that what I'm doing is just fine.

I'll take that challange up tomorrow between projects. Let's see if I can contact anyone. While I may not be respectiable these days (no, I was too respectable, ask any girl I dated in High school, way too)

I'll let you know how I make out. If I find them I will ask them to review the thread and if they would sell the rights and for how much.

Let me set the historical record straight.

I have purchased T-grips and gun grips from Tyler for about 30 years.

Melvin died about 10 years ago. The family then sold the business to a long time employee. It was during this time that they started appearing on the net.

The employee had a son (LEO) and daughter (part time LEO) that worked part time at the business. They did accept credit cards online and over the phone.

Five years ago they ran out of the grip inventory and never made more.

2-3 years ago they stopped accepting credit cards. My last order back then took over a month instead of the usual week. They took on a partner which helped with automotive division but later that changed.

According to their website last fall the current owner got sick and the family was trying to make heads or tails out of the business. Interesting BS as they had always been involved.

Then in March they said that they were moving the grip shop to a new location. From everything I remember the grip shop was always in the same building as the auto parts foundry.

I for one cannot believe any thing of what they say.

OK, so one no. Others?

Quality has to do with matterials, measurements and acceptance criteria. Take a look at the Apple iPad2 is made in China, IMHO that's pretty high quality.

I wouldn't have any problem with a Chinese made grip adapter. Bring it on.

I already have a plastic Trigger Shoe made in Japan I think I posted this earlier in the thread but FIE in Italy used to crank out Tyler clones. Numrich was selling them, but they sold out in a few days. I have also seen either a Japanese or Chinese T-Grip clone, in a blister pack with a tiger on it. The "cloners" must have given up because there wasn't much of a market, maybe they will make some more.

I think Tylers are in demand because they were a "vintage" touch to a vintage revolver. For pure functionality, there are other wood and rubber grip makers who offer stuff to fill the gap in the front, and few if any revolvers come with wood grip panels anymore besides the S&W Classics.

Maybe S&W will re-introduce the aluminum and rubber grip adapters.
