Question Stainless satin finish, You Like?

Seems like all the S&W stainless revolvers come with the satin finish. I find they don't look as good as shiny. Therefor I shine mine with Mother's Mag polish until they shine like a new dime. Am I wrong and am I diminishing the value?

I like 'em with a good shine. Easy to clean too.

I do like. What's your technique? Do you dissasemble the gun first? I have one on the way that I would like to polish. Nice work.

Shiny also but use SS polishing compound and a buffing wheel, does a much better, more professional appearance. Of course you most know what your doing!

I also like shiny. I have polished my S&W 686 & my Ruger SP101.

I like em both ways, but either STOCK satin finish or a HIGH polish...nothing in between. Here is one of each variation in 657 3":

I just don't care for the bead blasted finish just because you cannottouch it up. The satin finish is nice as well as high polish.

I agree. I like the beadblast finish, but they look like heck when they get marked up. Give me satin anyday!

I wouldn't trust myself with a buffing wheel. Therefore I use old soft cotton socks and Mother's Mag Wheel Polish (available in the wax isle of auto parts stores) to shine by hand. Very slow process but very theraputic and relaxing. The only items I remove are the thumb release button for the cylinder and grips.

On my hunting revolvers I prefer the satin, but my target and CCW guns I like the shine.

I get my stainless firearms blasted as I think the matte finish is the ducks guts...all a matter of personal taste...

Do to 'em whatever makes you happy, but, yes, any change from original probably will make any S&W handgun worth less.

I've already posted more than enough times that I like original finish. I have altered a few of my S&Ws in other ways that I think will give me more pleasure from them while I own them but I do so expecting that their future collector value will be diminished. Whether altering a common gun that is fired a lot changes a it's current value just depends on the tastes of the person you try to sell it to. A would be buyer who likes your alteration may pay a little more while a potential buyer who strongly dislikes the alteration will take a pass unless its a screaming deal. A lot of others just won't care as long as it shoots fine.

Perhaps I could learn to like seeing polished stainless S&W revolvers if I just focus on how they pose no threat to my budget.

Enjoy your boomers.
Gil

Satin finish or bead blast is best. What would be even better would be if Smith would provide a flat dark earth or coyote finish. One of the new polymer finishes that is resistent to everything. To each his own, but I never understood the need to polish a pistol up until it looked like something a drugstore cowboy would carry, or worse.

To each their own.

Since I don't like nickle guns, I like the satin finish better.

I definitely prefer shiny. This 686 was satin when purchased.A couple of hours later, using Mothers Mag polish while watching TV and voila!

These other two pics are of the same 66-2 before and after using the Mothers treatment. Both sides of the revolver, turned out equally just as nice.

I have used Mothers on all my Stainless. You can always drag a wire brush over it if you want them to look like factory.

A wire brush will not get the job done. The factory bead blast finish can be duplicated easily, with the correct beads. I don't see why you could not touch up a bead blasted gun.
When I bead blast a gun, I dissassemble the gun and remove the internals. I mask off the front and rear of the cylinder. I put the sideplate back on and plug the muzzel and the rear of the barrel. Comes out fine for me. Dean
