I am new to this site, and have a question about a S&W 686-3I bought used back in 1989-90 while in the Air Force.
The gun is a 686-3 with a "combat matte black" finish. I was wondering if the gun is a limited edition model, and what type of grips were original to it. It has pachmayer grips on it which were there when I bought it. It is a 6 inch barrel

It depends on the barrel length as there were two releases a 6 inch version and a 4 inch version.
The 6 inch had 2,876 delivered and the 4 inch had 1,559 and both were delivered in 1989.
