Default Pre-Lock??

Please forgive me for being to lazy to search the forum. I'm a hard-core S&W lover but not a real collector. I do have several S&W revolvers all shooter grade and I'm always looking for more. I'm seeing S&W's offered for sale listed as pre-lock. What exactly is a pre-lock and is there a post-lock?

It means that the handgun in question does not have the built-in trigger lock like most current production guns.

It is found on the left side of the frame by the cylinder release. Looks like a little black bump.

I currently have a new S&W 44 Special on lay away. It does have the Mickey Mouse lawyer resistant type lock on it.

Do these locks have any effect on the operation, trigger pull or any other negative possible problems?

In the past I've removed mag safeties on a Hi-Power and a Firestar 45. Internet chatter claims I could wind up with my gonads in the ringer if I sold them with the mag safeties removed. Being the original owner on the 44 and having it papered to me guess I should leave it alone. It will be hard though not to defeat it if it has any undesirable effects on the function. Makes me wonder it the big mags recoil couldn't cause the locks to come loose and bind everything up.

Dave, if you do a search on here you will quickly find that some have had no issue with them, while others have had them lock up while shooting.I will not own one of these as I do not need to play the risk game with it. There is a member who sells a "plug" to fill the whole in the frame if you choose to remove the lock assembly. Kyle

There are "pre-lock" and "lock" and "no-lock" guns out there now. The pre-lock gun refer to those being made before Smith & Wesson began using the internal lock. The no-lock guns refer to the new production guns that do not have the internal lock.

If you're not using the gun for self-defense, the lock shouldn't matter one bit. For serious SD, I prefer to carry no-lock guns, one less thing to worry about. ALL guns, being mechanical creatures, are subject fo failure at any given time. To solve that issue, carry 2 aka a "NY reload".
