Default S&W 617 Issues

I just picked up my new 617 the other day and took it out to shoot it.
loaded it up and tried to pull the trigger and the hammer would go back 3/4 the way and no matter how hard you pull the hammer would not go back.
Tried to pull the hammer back single action and again 3/4 the way and would stick, however if you pulled the trigger a little the hammer would go all the way back and set.
Popped out the cylinder and the rounds where all seated.
Tried Federal Bulk 550, Winchester Dynapoint, CCI Stinger and Winchester M22 with the same results.
With no Ammo in the Cylinder the hammer goes back double or single action.
I was hoping for a silly tip or trick so I would not have to send a brand new gun back.

Did you clean and lightly oil the gun prior to shooting the first time?
Make sure it's clean under the extractor. Really clean.

Yah, I cleaned the gun up a bit and oiled it. It had some sort of grease on it that seemed sticky.

Never had a new one like that. There is an 800 number I would have called before posting here.

Does it have the internal lock? If so, take your key and work it a few times.

Exclamation Star of the show

First I would make sure it is totally clean under the Extractor
and recessed area on Cylinder where the Star goes into.

One time I had it where the Cylinder would not turn and
Trigger/Hammer not right.

I quickly realized what was going on, underneath the Extractor
was a very small piece of residue or crushed powder.

Suggestion; always carry Q-Tips with you.

Hope that helps

I'd scrub it some more. remove the grips & hose the insides w/ penetrating oil (NOT WD-40) then blow it out w/ air gun or canned air. If that doesn't work call S&W.

I have called them, its a 4-6 week turn around on a brand new gun so I came here in hopes that I would not loose the gun for that long it took me forever to get it with this pandemic to begin with but I guess I just have ****ty luck.

My guess is an improperly fitted hand.. 1-800....

Rip the hammer back and you could maybe get it to cycle..( It passed QC..)

Open the cylinder, pull the cylinder release back and see if it will cock without the extractor in the way.

You cannot get it to cycle double action or it feels like something will break if you do, single I can get the hammer back if I pull the trigger as I pull the hammer back which is not very safe if it doesn't lock.

See if the hand is protruding out from the recoil shield with the hammer cocked. The tip of the hand may be hitting the rim of the case. If it is too long, you can file the tip back to flush with a diamond file. Take the hand out of the gun first.

I will take a look at that when I get home. Last night I noticed that the rounds in the chamber seem to be really loose and can shuck back and forth in the cylinder could that cause the gun to get hung and make it get stuck when it cycles? It also has some horizontal play where the cylinder attaches to the arm, but that seems to go away when you close the cylinder.

All that stuff is normal. The cylinder always has some front to back play when open. Same with rounds in the chamber.

Well I took it out again yesterday and found that some of the rounds are bulging back by the rim. I marks the cylinder with a dry erase marker and it seems to be the same chamber every time. So it looks like I don't have have a choice but to send it back.
