Default 627 PC V-comp doesn't feel right

I know everyone is going to say "Send it back!" and I probably will, but I want to shoot it at least once first to see if there are other problems.

I bought the two-tone, current production 627 5" V-Comp Performance Center, and although the gun is beautiful, there are problems. The trigger feels heavier than other non-PC revolvers I own, and it also feels somewhat odd. I know it is an 8 shot rather than 6, so that may account for some of the difference, but it does not seem like a "PC trigger." I recently also acquired the 629 PC V-comp and that has an amazing trigger, which brought a smile of wonder the first time I dry fired it. This revolver's trigger would seem off on any gun, but seems ****** after feeling the smooth, light trigger on the 629. The SA pull was fine, but in DA something is not right.

Next problem is that when you push the latch and try to swing out the cylinder, it doesn't want to come out. It sticks a bit, and you need to use a little more force than usual to get it to unlock. I oiled the gun and looked for obvious problems, but I don't see anything. I have compared this to all my other S&W revolvers and something clearly isn't right here.

So, both the trigger and the cylinder release seem off. Is there anything I can do, besides shooting it and sending it back, to figure out what is wrong? I don't like buying guns sight unseen, but these are tough items to find, and local shops did not have them.

Any ideas? Am I describing the problem adequately when I speak to S&W reps on the phone? Also, any advice on which smith to ask for in the Performance Center to try and make this gun right. I am as disappointed in this gun as I was pleased by the other PC revolver.

PC Shop guns don't have super slick & lite triggers - unless you send them back and request it. Also, the front lockup is likely a ball detent on the front of the crane - it will be stiffer to release than a production gun. Check the extractor rod - it's a LH thread - from the front, turning CCW would tighten it. If it's loose, place some spent cartridge cases in the chambers and tighten the rod by hand. Let us know if it helps.

The 629 I have also has the ball detent release, but this one feels different. Maybe it just needs to wear in a little, I don't know. I don't remember if the 629 was hard to open at first.

I will check the extractor rod and see if that does anything.

As far as the trigger, I shot the 629 with Federal primers as well as some American Eagle factory, and they all went fine. I did not request "slick and light" on the other gun, but it sure came that way! I have no clue (yet) if it will have problems lighting off non-Federal primers. I only shot 5 factory rounds and that was enough.

They are sending me a label to return it.

What phrase should I use to explain I want the smoothest, lightest trigger they can do that will reliably ignite any brand primer?

I wish I could send them my 629 and tell them to duplicate that one. I still can't get over how good a DA trigger can be.

Default 627 VComp Trigger

Shrink i have sent dozens of revolvers up to smith for trigger jobs over the years. I simply tell them on my work order form "make the action as smooth and as light as possible without affecting reliability" Haven't been disappointed yet!!

Default They fixed it!

I had to call and check up on it, because the guy on the phone told me that it was in the "charge section" but after I explained that this was a new PC gun with a lousy trigger and a cylinder which did not open smoothly, it got sent out later that day.

I finally shot it, and it was worth the wait. I still think my other PC revolver 629 V-comp has a lighter, sweeter trigger, but this one is still just fine now. The gun shoots amazingly well, and I gave it a workout with light bullseye loads, medium jhp, and then some 158 gr lswc loads with 2400.

I had great accuracy with 13 and 13.5 gr of 2400 and the dardas hard cast 158 LSWC. I got 1142 and 1190 fps (with the v-comp installed, 5" barrel), and the boom was impressive. Very easy to control with the comp, though.

Does this load sound too much for the gun and the brass, or am I still well below max? I'm not sure my ears could take a steady diet of these. I was doubled up, with plugs jammed all the way in and good muffs on top. It still sounded way way louder than anything else on the range.

Well, this is a late reply to your thread but I recently bought a new 625 PC. It had a smooth but quite heavy trigger pull out of the box. I didn't realize I could send it back to S&W but I did install a Jerry Miculek reduced power spring set(hammer and rebound slide springs) for use as a USPSA competition gun. Now it has a very light trigger pull and I have to use Federal primers to get reliable ignition. Others have installed Wolff reduced power spring sets to lighten it up somewhat.

Hi and thanks for this thread. I just purchased a new 627 V Comp and will be picking it up in a week. I haven't dry fired it yet. Just checked it out. Any recommendations on accurate factory .38 and .357 ammo? I'll be reloading, but after a bit.
Good to know I can ask Smith to lighten the trigger if necessary.
