Thumbs up

Looks like a fair price for a 617 in that barrel length..........which I'm thinking makes this K-frame the heaviest of all K-frames ever made. I have one just like this, and I have found it a rather specialized unit. I have a 2X scope on mine, and it is dedicated to benchrest plinking and varminting. I brought it on a turkey hunt awhile back. The guide wanted to know where my shotgun was. I showed him the 617, and told him......."you don't need a shotgun to shoot a turkey in the head at this distance". I don't think he was impressed until I dropped my bird with a CCI Green Tag right through the eye. As heavy as that scoped 617 is, it's still much lighter than a shotgun or a heavy barreled 22 rifle.

By the way.........you should have no complaints dealing with pistolpac. I purchased a 17-4 with the 8 & 3/8 barrel last year from him. This gun was in better than advertised condition. I was very happy with this purchase, as this gun flat out shoots. That long tapered barrel balances nicely for bullseye shooting. It's an entirely different animal than the 617 full-lugged barrel. If you are thinking about checking out a long barrel Smith, you will be pleasantly surprised with a model 14 or 17 in that barrel length.

Very nice catch and the best price I've seen on an 8 3/8" in a long time. It looks like a no-dash less the combats. I could repeat what tdan wrote about how nose heavy 8 3/8" FL 617s are but I'll just say one of them is enough for me. You're building a great collection of 617 no-dashes. Now you just need to row your boat over to Europe and snag a 617 PC to round out the collection.

k22fan,

i thought it was a great price.....i think the combination of it ending on memorial day AND ending around noon helped me get it so cheap

i use to have an extra set of combats lying around but they got used up on another 8 3/8 617 that came with factory targets....i do have a few nice pairs of factory target grips i would probabyl trade for a nice set of combats....

these guns just call to me...i want to buy every one i see....

Add to your list the fact that I didn't keep my usual eagle eye on GB 617s this week. I'd have suckered for another one at $650. They do shoot great.

That just makes them all the more desireable to me. Dash ones are my first choice.

410Bore,

I was watching the 617 no-dash that went for $835. GB prices certainly are up and down all over the place. I just put a 2.5" 686-3 on layway at a LGS only because it "spoke to me". I had to look at similiar ones on GB as a substitute for fondling it while I wait to pay it off. There's an identical one on GB in the same 98-99% condition with box & papers someone has bid $747 plus shipping on. I paid the store's $537 OTD without trying a lower offer.

You got your new 8 3/8" 617 no-dash inexpensively enough that you could buy Midway's $100 4" barrel, install it and arrive at a 4 incher for less than you'd probably have to spend for one. A couple of members posted in the gunsmithing section that S&W only charged $80 to install barrels they supplied. On the other hand, you could save money in the long run by spending a few thousand on a lathe and turning that 8 3/8 inch barrel into two 3 1/2 inchers. The savings would come from filling your time with something besides shopping for more guns.

I would have loved to have another 617 like the one that sold for $835...i think i bid up to $700 on it....then it got crazy

I bought a used one a year or so ago. Serial number BFSxxxx. It shot great but I noticed I was getting a lot of split cases and a few failure to fires. Started checking and the cylinder was over boared quite a bit. Sent it to Smith on their dime. Got it back in eight days and it is working great. You might check the bores to see how loose your shells are fitting.

Smith & Wesson customer serive is the best in the buisness.

I was wondering if any body has seen a new Model 17 Masterpiece. The prices scare me and I wanted to know if any one has seen one
