I have a 2008 S&W Product Guide that shows a 629 Carry Comp (Product code #170279). Has a 3" barrel with fixed rear sight and adj orange dovetail front sight with port. Checkered wood grips that look like Eagle boot grips. Does anyone have this revolver? How do you like it? Does it have the internal lock? This revolver is from the Performance Center. I am very intrigued by this revolver. Might look for one in the future. Any info is appreciated. Thank you...

Yes, I have one. It's got the lock, but that isn't a problem for me. Mine shoots pretty well, and the port cuts muzzle flip some. It seems to recoil a little less than my 4" 629. I like the orange front sight with the fixed rear, and also the ball detent lock-up in the crane. I don't like the wooden grips for shooting, it hurts with magnum loads. They were replaced with Pachmayers, except for pictures. Overall though, it's a keeper....

It is part of living in ARIZONA. This one had Eagle boot grips on it when found. Finger groove was a step up to bigger handle. Little more to hang on to. I put it in a flat holster and put it in my pocket where Model 60 generally rides. It is a little bigger.
I am certain mine is chambered to .44 Special only, I don't see me shooting Magnums out of this little gun.

I just bought a S&W 629-1 for a birthday present for myself a few days ago. I was happy until I saw this picture. That 629 comp carry is a handsome gun and is about as perfect a carry gun as can be had.

That 629 fixed sight would be one of the few lock revolvers I would own.

I own one. First .44 I ever shot. First time out was with the Eagle boot grips; not a pleasant experience. Second time out was with the Performance Center grips shown below. A little better but still not enjoyable. I'm gonna keep it anyway. Next time will be with Hogue rubbers. Just got a Lobo Gunleather for it and my 627 Bloodwork reissue.

Jesse, you have the same problem I have. You too don't know when you have too many guns. I haven't broken the code, so I just keep buying more until I figure it out. Oh yea! Shoot .44 spl out of your carry gun unless you are in bear country. Just a suggestion.

Excellent advice on the load for that hand cannon. Shooting it can be a painful experience with full magnums. Had a set of them grips like yours on my 3" 629 and they drew blood. Boot grips are too small for controlling recoil. Finally went with Ahrends FG that I sanded down and all was well. A set of PAST shooting gloves makes a whole lot of difference and your shooting sessions are enjoyable when shooting magnums.

I would personally get rid of the lock and buy a plug off of Bulleye Smith if I were to use it for SD, but thats my opinion.

That is a great woods/CC weapon WITH the right load. Looks great too!

I really like the 3" 629. hope I can get one for another "unofficial" birthday present. They are scarce here in South Georgia. I guess those that own them have to have them pried from their hands to part with them.

Good point about gloves. I have a pair of tactical gloves somewhere. I am going to try to find them before I go to the range again. I will see if they improve my next shooting session with my 629.

Reviving an old thread ... I just got home from the FFL with a 629 Carry Comp. It's a Performance Center 629-6.

The grips on it are apparently for a K frame, I haven't decided what to put on it, probably a set of Pachmayr compacts.


It's hard to see in this pic, but it's got THE PLUG and all the lock parts have been removed.


The barrel is ported and the front sight is dovetail mounted with an orange stripe that shows up extremely well.


There is a ball detent on the crane for solid lock up. This ought to be a standard feature.


You can see the notch in the barrel underlug that the detent fits into.


Any thoughts on concealment leather for this one? Maybe something that would also fit this 3 inch 629

Looks like a great addition to your 44's. I agree on the grips, that gun needs pachs. It would ride high and tight in a street combat from el paso.

Would anyone know what type of grips were original to this piece?? or how many were produced??

I grabbed one on GB. Really nice gun. I custom fit a set of Ahrends boot grips so that the back of the frame is a "perfect fit" and rounded the finger groove so that I got consistent 3 finger grip. It took most of the sting out of heavier loads but the gun really shines with Keith type 44 Spl loads. Definitely a permanent addition!

Here's an example of a 1992 Model. This is how it shipped from the factory (with Goncalo Alves finger grove grips - N Frame RB).

The 2nd gun on left is the same gun in a 357. Its my new carry gun. My LGS had a price on it for $1000 and i paid $900 cash. He had one more and i know he would let it go for less then $900. Knowing that he needs the money to pay for all the guns that came in . PM me if you want his #
It is my best gun for 2013--I said that same thing when i bought my Ruger 357 Willy C. but this SW blows the Ruger away !!!!

I got one from when my brother passed. Its growing on me. It shoots well enough. S&W tells me that 822 were made. I got a Triple K holster for it that works well for CC. It came with 2 pairs of grips. The beautiful wood combats are for show definitely not for the range. Hogue grips make even magnum loads manageable. I just wish the trigger was as nice as my 29-2!

Don't see that "raised" style latch very often. That didn't last long in normal production. Notice the later versions all have the now common MIM "Nike" latch.
