If you compare the SP101 to the 317...the SP101 with the longer barrel will not be as "hideable" and it weighs over twice as much as the 317.
I don't know much about the Ruger line. I think you should go to their forum and look into it. You likely need to be comparing the Ruger to one of the Smith stainless steel 22 revolvers in similar barrel length. The 101 vs. the 317 is not exactly an apple-to-apple comparison. Sure...it's a 22-to-22 comparison, but there is a lot of difference between the two guns.
I am not poo-pooing the Ruger. I just don't know a thing about them. You would not likely find a good used 317 for $450....at's about all I could say.

the sp101 is for the wife for target practice, she likes the size and feel of my M38, but not the boom, so I was looking for a small frame .22lr for her

Understood. My only point was that if you were considering weight or barrel length in your decision, comparing the 101 to a 317 is more of an apple-to-orange comparison.
Don't make the same mistake I did, but I certainly don't mind the mistake as I love the 317 so much that I bought two of them. My mistake was putting the 317 in my wife's hand first before I put some others in her hand. When she held it and looked at it....that was all-she-wrote as they say. She will occasionally shoot some of my other guns, but the 317 is THE one she was looking for and she shoots it very well.

JUMP on that SP101. You could easily make a few dollars on it if you end up not liking it. The Ruger guys go kinda nutty over them. In fact, if you do get it and end up wanting to sell it, let me know! I'd be a buyer for one at that price.

I have a 4 inch heavy barrel Ruger SP101 and I would not trade it for anything else!Yes it is a little heavy,if I want to stick a .22 in my pocket the Ruger is not the gun.But for practicing shooting plates and just general shooting it is the tops!I have a very nice '57 K-22 and it is a great revolver but the Ruger will out shoot it! Since it is stainless I can carry it anywhere in all types of weather.Get the SP 101,I don't think you will be unhappy!

The Ruger SP101 .22lr will bring $600 and up for someone that wants it bad enough. Snatch it!

well I just got home from looking at it, and I passed because of weight, i don't think my wife will like it, and I already have a M18-4 that i love.. May reconsider though, with comments being strong towards buying at that price.. But all is not lost, he had a 4" no dash 686 that came home with me for $400...

Mtime7, I live here in Fairbanks. I wouldn't mind having a chance at buying this SP101. I think you're right in that they don't seem to bring the high prices locally that they do online. Could you send me a pm with info?

That is a much better deal and I think everybody and his one-eyed cousin could figure that out. Does it have all of it's parts? (LOL)
Look, I recently got put onto a recall of the no dash 686's. See if your new piece has a small "m" stamped near/around the model number.

Hi mtime7. Your post here made me aware of this gun, but then I thought it might be on one of the local internet boards, which it was. I called the seller and went and looked at it and offered him $450.00, but he said someone else was already interested in it for that price. I looked at it again and reluctantly paid his asking price of $500.00. After taking time on the way home to shoot it, I'm glad I did. It's accurate enough with the one brand of ammo I tried, and someone took extra care in assembling the action for it is very smooth.
I have rimfire Smith & Wessons, but I've thought for a while that a 4" 22 lr SP101 for a carrying gun while hunting, camping and berry picking would be nice. I can carry this one without worrying that an expensive blue finish is being damaged, and practice ammo is cheap. My kids will have a great time shooting this one too.

I snagged one of these SP101's with a 2 1/4" bbl last year and it is a great carry gun for small stuff. It is fun to shoot and not as finicky as my Pre 17's as to what it will eat. Kyle
