Springfield Commemorative Mountain Gun
A little guidance please...
I found a 45acp Springfield Commemorative Mountain Gun on an auction site. I am interested in buying one very much. This one is slightly used, no box but has a certificate. Owner is set at $1000. Is that a good price? It seems high to me, I offfered him $850 (I was a little high I believe) and he turned it down. What are they worth?

I think your offer was "more than reasonable." I wouldn't have gone higher than that.

This.
I sold to another forum member a 625 MG pre lock in .45 acp late last year for a grand sum of $650 IIRC. That was no logo, no lock, and to many would be a premium over the commemoratives. Unless you REALLY dig Springfield Armory that is.
P.S. trying to get that gun back as a matter of fact, no luck yet.

This is the reason why I belong to this forum! I didn't know about the 625-6 until I read about it here. I would be a buyer for either version, Springfield would be fine if there was only a small premium. Let me know if theres one out there!!!

Mike,
If you haven't tried a post in the "buy" section of this forum it would be a prime place to seek one of the models you're looking for. Lots of people monitor that section and know of guns that may be available in their areas...

Mike,
I can't help much with prices except to say that for the last 40 years I've read over and over that the value of commemoratives goes down drastically if they've been fired. However, I've only seen people buy commemoratives that offered features that they couldn't get otherwise, and most of them were bought to be fired. The SAC's features that you couldn't buy on another 625 are the combination of forged internals and a Mountain Gun's tapered barrel. I wouldn't trade mine for a MIM 625-6, but a -6 would handle and shoot the same so reasonable people might prefer to not have all the gold. When I bought mine new there were no other .45 ACP Mountain Guns and the fancy trim has kind of grown on me.
You'll eventually find what you want but in the meantime you can swipe 625smith's picture of a SAC from this thread in the 1961 to 1980 forum: Pictures of your S&W comemmoratives and LE special issues? All frames.... ( 1 2 3). 625smith hasn't shot me for borrowing it yet and it makes a great desk top!
Best Regards,
Gil
