Need help with valuation- 1987 17-5 6"
I know nothing about S&W revolvers other than what I incidentally read concerning the 29.
I've been offered a trade for a 1987 S&W 17-5, 6", "3 T's", and pics show some bluing wear on the cylinder and some spots on the frame. Based on appearance to my untrained eye I would book-rate it 85%.
Any and all ballparks in value would be greatly appreciated. I don't really need it or the gun I'd be giving up, and they might both be equally collectible so I'm just looking for some solid info on where the numbers line up.

If it is mechanically sound, and depending on its exact finish condition, about $500.

Any more room left on the band wagon? In the condition described $500.
Older S&W .22's are going for crazy high prices. In better condition, with a box and a 4-inch barrel, it could be a $1,000 gun.

Imagine that. Especially since 22LR is so scarce these days. Most of what I have seen for sale is no where near collectors grade condition either so, what the heck is driving up the prices?

I don't know for sure. Maybe the general public just's likes .22's. Even though a lot of hard core gunners I know kinda turn their nose up to it.
It seemed to me, the harder it was to get .22 ammo, the higher the prices went on the pre-lock Smith revolvers. When the ammo supply hit zero, the gun prices went to the moon.
Now that .22 ammo can be had (sometimes), I wonder if the gun prices will go down some. If they have, I haven't seen it.
