Default Curious 586 8 3/8 milled???

Saw a 586-3 today in the LGS with an 8 3/8 bbl which was milled for scope rings along the rib.

I've never seen one of these.

The owner says it's a special run of 1000 and that they are rare. Sorry, no pic.

He wants $750 and it's in 95% condition.

Anyone heard of this version or is it a bubba job?

Does the price seem accurate?

I don't have the catalogue at my fingertips, but Smith & wesson did make a run of long barrelled 586s like that. The one thousand number sounds right. They came with the rings but I understand that the factory no longer has them available, and I don't know if the ring manufacturer (which I think was Millett) has them or if any of thier stock numbers will fit. $750? Well, I think they are pretty cool guns but the question is do YOU think it has $750 worth of appeal.

Alright, so I got the book out. 1,000 made in 1989 with "broaching for scope mount". Another thousand in the 686 model.

Asking what a gun is worth to me is a dangerous question.

I generally like to find nice guns a little below market value for two reasons:

1. It's too easy to find the stuff I like, being a newer revolver collector/shooter, so finding a good deal makes it more challenging and fun.

2. If I decide I just don't like the thing I can get out faster without taking a big hit. Slow and steady wins the race.

Would I spend $750 on it? Yeah, but it's Monopoly money so I value it a little less and spend it too loosely without something to measure it against. If I'm spending $750 on a gun then I really don't need that money; it's just the tool I use to get what I really want. Without some market value against which to measure my purchase, I'm likely to spend too much in the moment of lust. A little of that is okay with me but I have to be responsible too.

These things are extra. Family is first and if it ever got to the point where we had to sell something to keep us going, my guns go first. And that is what keeps me honest.

If I'm thirsty, water is worth a whole lot more. I don't want to get greedy.

If you can make sense of my ramblings and paraphrase, feel free. It's been a long, tiring day. I'm having a hard time with the conveyance here.

I'm looking for comparisons and facts. Or at least "XX is a deal, XX is a steal, XX - get real!"

Thanks

I think it is a tad high at $750. You may need to hang onto it for a few years to recoop your money, that is, if you needed to sell it one day. The L frames have not yet commanded the premiums as the N frames have, and the longer barrels are not popular at this moment in time.
