Recently purchased this 686-3 with 8 3/8 broached barrel. 1 of 1100. Luckily it came with the scarce Millet scope rings and the original Combats. I'll give it some range time once the Simmons scope is swapped for something better. Talk about distortion...that scope made the garage siding look like it was close to a hot fire.

Here is mine 4" no dash, I bought it used, I believe it was in the mid 80s.
I know, rust on trigger and stains on the SS, it spends lots of time out on the boat.

Don't think I've posted this photo before. I've owned several standard L-Frames, as well as a Mountain Gun and SSR. A 586, then 686, replaced the early model 66 I'd been carrying every working day for several years.
Only have one currently, a 686-5 6 and 7 shooter.

Even if L frames are not intended foe Bullseye shooting, this still is my favorite style. This is the reason because my wheelguns wear thumbrest grips, and factory or combat grips sleep in the drawer.

Did all of the no dash 2.5" guns come with Combats ?
Mine did, Photoman. I love their tacticool appearance, but no brand of finger grooves have ever fit my hand. I sold the ones that came on my 686 (pictured below) and replaced them with Magna PC grips and a Tyler-T adapter. This works better for me. While the no dash was away for the M recall, I had S&W swap the cylinder for a 7 shot. IMHO, it's a great carry weapon now...

I had to bring this thread back, there is so much to read!! I am dying to get my hands on a 686 no dash through -4 snubbie. They are so beautiful! I have to say, in my opinion you made a great choice. I thought I would like the combat grips, but after seeing a snub with them, I realized the are wider than I thought and I don't like them. I would keep them for value's sake, but I'd put old school magnas on mine too! That is so cool looking. I have seen a picture of a Lew Horton one that appears as though magnas came in it, but maybe they were changed. It had the box and everything and no sign of the combat grips so who knows. I have seen a few pictures of 686 pre-lock snubs with these grips, and I can never see enough of them. I saw one at a gun show, don't know if LH or not, but it came with magna grips stock. Such an awesome gun, but I didn't have 1,200 bucks to buy it unfortunately. If I did, I'd have snagged it in a heartbeat. Nice gun, very nice!

I picked this up, new, at a store in SoCal on Nov 2, 1991. Still have the receipt. It's pretty faded but looks like it was $355 tax included. It remains in almost NOS condition.

Such a thing of beauty, nice collection. Never sell them, keep them clean and shoot them often. Well done.

Here is my 686-6+. It was my very first S&W and the only one I've ever bought new. Of course it didn't look like that when I bought it, actually the finish wasn't that great. Since I intended on shooting it more than admiring it I installed a patridge front sight and a lighter rebound spring. It is a breeze to shoot and I don't worry a single bit about hurting it. This wasn't the gun that got me into collecting S&Ws but it was the gun that led me to buy the gun that got me into collecting S&Ws.

I'm years behind as this thread was originally from 2011, but it's so rare to see an old school 686 snub with magna grips! That is so cool! I want one too! I've seen 2 that came stock with magnas, but that's it. Most snubs have the combat grips, but I don't care for those. That 686 you have with magnas is one of my few must have guns. I'd LOVE a snub 586 from the 80's and put magnas on that, but I'd have a better chance finding the 686. One of the 2 I saw with Mangas was at a gun show a year ago, unfortunately I didn't have the money to buy it. One day I'll have one. Did your's come with them or did you put them on yourself? Either way, I LOVE when people have magnas on a Smith & Wesson revolver. I can't stand the look or feel of rubber grips. My dad used to have a 6 inch 686 when I was a kid and even though they weren't magnas, I used to make him put the wood grips on before we'd go to the range. He sold most of his guns about 10 years ago and at the time I wasn't a big revolver fan, especially longer barrels so when he let me pick a gun, I went for the Colt 1911, but alas I was denied. Said it was worth too much money and he needed money. So I took his 40 cal Beretta 9000s. That is such a nice gun man, so glad I finally found another picture of one with magnas!

New 686
I picked up one this week. I have been wanting to upgrade my 686_ for a -5 for sometime and I found one. Low mileage. I'll upgraded it with Altamont grips for Christmas. Already put in a 13# rebound spring and a fiber optic front sight. ($600 private sale if you're curious.)

My 686-4. Gave it a nice polish and trigger job and I am by no means a gunsmith. It turned out pretty sweet though. She wears some gorgeous Ahrends grips. My 386 jumped in for a picture too. It's pretty in it's own way.

I have had this for a while, but finally got it out to the range today for the first time. Boy is it a great gun! After watching me shoot for a while, I had to wipe the saliva off my girlfriend's lips and let her try it out.
These are 1980's S&W grips I picked up on ebay. They look great but I think I'm going to go back to the rubber grips that came with the gun.

Right around the time I picked up my 4" no dash I also found a 686-1 4". It was bead blasted at sometime in the past but very well done.
Both these guns have the M stamp
