Model 66-2. Should I buy? I went back and bought it. Took it to the range today. WOW
Hi guys. I need some help with this one. I saw a Model 66-2 with a 2-1/2" bbl, round butt with original Smith grips at the gun show I am working at this weekend. The dealer has it marked at $595.00. I have bought from him before, and he said he would let me have it for $425.00. This is not something I was looking for or on my wish list right now, but is it too good of a deal to pass up? I need some advice tonight if you can help in case it is still there tomorrow.
Thanks,
Stu

Sounds like a steal at 425....the 66-2 is a nice gun to have.

I think $425 is a good price for a 2 1/2" gun depending on condition. The short barreled guns are very popular at present. I bought one recently, it is fun to shoot and I wouldn't sell it for $425.

That is a good deal if the gun is trouble free and in very nice shape. If it has issues or has been rough handled all its life it wouldn't be that great a deal.

As has been said. If it's in good shape, it's a steal. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. If it's not something you've been looking for. You can always sell it for a profit.

I concur. If it is in good shape, $425 is a very good deal. Around these parts a 2.5" 66 in good condition runs between $500 and $550.

I'd jump on it if it's in condition as stated above. Just my 2 1/2 cents worth.

Horrible deal on a terrible gun. I would pass. Where is this paper weight for sale at by the way? I should really see it for myself in person just how bad it really is...

I'm going to be working the gun show in Jacksonville on July 16 - 17. If I get it, I will bring it there for you to see if you go to that show. I got a good laugh from your tongue in cheek reply.

I recently purchased two 66-2s on GunBroker - I paid $450 for a mint 4" and $432 for an equally nice 6". As hot as short-barreled revolvers seem to be these days, $425 for a nice one is a very good buy.

Buy, Buy, Buy! If its in good shape you're getting one heck of a deal on a great snub. It's what I have strapped on right now and very accurate for only a 2.5" barrel.
If you're used to shooting magnums and going to use it for SD, 158 gr. Speer GD's are great rounds IMO.

It was still there, so I bought it.
I went back to that dealers table Sunday morning and the gun was still there. It is now in my safe. Bob, you were right. It does make a nice paper weight. This picture does not do it justice. I will post some more tomorrow taken in the sunlight without a flash. Thanks again for all your input, guys.

Good one.
IMO the Combat Magnum makes the best looking snubbie ever. Nice catch.

My only real beef against 19's/66's is the magna stocks. None of them fit my hand. I bought some Ahrends for my 19 and it's like it completes the gun for me. I'm thinking of trying the Retro Banana to see if I like it better. You might try one for yourself if the magnas don't fit your hand either.
Mine made from moradillo wood:
Another good option is Altamont makes a round butt boot grip that they don't advertize on their website but they will sell you. It's what comes on the 586+ that is ported.

Stu ... 425 to obtain what many folks believe to be the perfect snub revolver is a great score. Enjoy!

Excellent weapon at a great price. I'm a sucker for 2.5" 19/66's. Got seven of 'em. One on my hip right now.

Pics I Promised
Here it is guys. All flitzed up and ready do go. Heading to the range Wednesday. It's almost a shame to fire it after cleaning it up, but I am dying (bad choice of words ) to shoot it. I'll report back after I fire it.

Nice find! And worth every penny. I also like the high-polish approach for these little gems - here's my 66-2 with Ahrends stocks; it's one of my "go to" guns for concealed carry.

You did do better. That is a great score. I am in Broward County too. I sell holsters at the gun shows all over Florida, and usually pick up deals like that. I haven't seen many like these come through lately. Congratulations on a great buy.

You did great Stu! Thats a beauty and you did great. Shined mine up a bit too and love it. Very accurate little weapons. There is another thread running on grips for your revolver. Highly recommend Ahrends Boot Grips if you'll be packing that baby. Much more control when firing (especially magnums), conceal very well and they look great too. I have the FG model and lightly sanded the pointy portion of the grooves down to fit my small-medium size hand perfectly. Here is a pair on my 3" 66-2 and have a pair on my 2.5" -2.
If you want easier cleanups treat that baby with some Militec-1 then apply a coat of wax to it. Keeps it lubed under severe conditions and makes clean ups a breeze. Blows Breakfree away!
Congrats and enjoy!

Thanks. I will take a look at the grip thread. I kinda like the original grips that it came with. I also have a pair of Pachmayr and Hogue K Frame round butt grips. I am planning on going to the range tomorrow. I will fire it will all three. I probably won't carry this piece. I usually carry my AMT .45 Backup in a Hide-It holster (formerly Pager Pal), from Concealment Concepts - Concealed Carry Holsters - Hide-It Holster. It conceals great, and living in South Florida I can get away without wearing an over shirt or an untucked shirt. However, I am a sucker for a nice set of grips...so who knows.

I carried a M66-2 for many years as a duty weapon. I found factory magna stocks and a Tyler T Grip worked best for me.

Good, congrats! I really like mine, and wish I could have bought the snubby M19-3 I saw a few years ago.
Handy little wheelguns.

Just Back Fron The Range

Well, I just got back from the range. I fired a cylinder full of 38 specials just to get the feel of the gun. I then switched to 158 grain .357s and never went back to the 38s. What an awesome shooting gun. I fired it with the original wood grips and also with pachmayr grips. There was not much difference to me. The pachmayrs did absorb a bit more of the recoil, but it was not uncomfortable at all to shoot with the original S&W wood grips. I had the target out at the 7 yard mark, and firing single action held to a 2 to 2-1/2" grouping.
Firing it double action, the group was just a bit wider, maybe around 3". Thank you all for your advice and suggestions to get this gun. I love it. The only problem now is, I have to clean it.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I really hate cleaning guns. Maybe because I do such a thorough job cleaning them. It just takes too long, especially if you shoot seveal guns. I also took my newest 28-2 6" bbl with me...but that is for another thread.
