Default Debating on a Model 10-7

While traveling for work I stopped in a small gunshop. Among other treasures under the counter, they had a 4" Model 10-7 that looked almost new.

There was a very faint drag line on the cylinder, the rifling was sharp and crisp, and the blue was deep and rich. There was almost no wear in the finish.

Here's my dilemma: they want $395+tax. I'm not sure if that's a good deal. Unfortunately, I didn't note down the serial number. The only thing I remember is that there was a letter Y near the beginning. I was too taken with the appearance.

They have a blue factory box with the revolver, but I doubt it was originally for that pistol as it has a date stamp of 1973 inside the lid.

So, what do you think? Should I bite the bullet and give them a call? Or let this one pass?

Thanks.

David

I had heard the 10-7's were only made for 1 year, maybe it was 1973? I don't remember, I don't have a 10-7 and I don't have access to my SC of S&W right now.

If the gun looks nearly new, $395 + costs is a pretty good deal. Make sure it's not a reblue, look for a "buffed" look on the lettering and S&W logo. Check for timing and lockup, and endshake and then if it's good to go, I would have no trouble paying that for a like new 10-7.

If it's been reblued, then it's overpriced.

Just checked my big book o' S&W. 10-7s were introduced in 1977. The 10-8 was also introduced in 1977. So Stantheman is probably right about the one year of production.

dsbock,

I absolutely love my Model 10 4". It's a dash 3 or 4, I can't remember. Anyways, it shoots extremely well...even with the small fixed sights I have no problem filling the black with six holes at 30 feet. These K frames are the bomb, and I think that $395 is a very reasonable price, given the stated condition. You may regret letting this one slip through your fingers. It will digest +P ammo all day long also. I paid $312 +tax and I knew I was getting a deal. Good luck...let us know what happens.

I think $395 for that gun is a good deal if it's all original and it's not refinished because it's a 4 inch. If it was a 6 inch I'd say it would be about $50 to high.

Hi,
That is a fair deal on a model 10 in good condition. I bought a M&P pre 10 4 inch about eight months ago and paid $399 out the door. This revolver is over 95 % condition. I would buy it.

"If it's been reblued, then it's overpriced."

I am curious why you would say that this gun would be overpriced if reblued. Unless you have an old gun that is a proven collector's gun, it would seem to me that a professional bluing would enhance the quality and thereby the intrinsic value of a shooter's gun, which this one appears to be. I might even venture to say that if someone went to the trouble of having it blued at S&W it might even be worth more. I am not a "collector", I am a shooter and I truly appreciate the restoration efforts of old gun owners. I feel the same about the folks that restore tanks and airplanes and just about every thing in between. I rather be shooting a nice piece of history rather than looking at it. I think we sometimes put too much stock in "original" condition.

10-7s were made from '77 thru the mid 80's. I have one made in '79 and another made in '84. One (the '79 version) has the large S&W logo on the sideplate (right side) and the other one has the small logo on the left side.
