My revolvers From NYPD

The 3 model 64's in the middle I used in 1988 on patrol
The bottom two are not NYPD just range and HD
most had the combat revolver package from Smith and Wesson.
The top 2 model 10's are redone by S&W as well one DAO, I love DAO revolvers.

Those are some mighty pretty bullet launchers ya got there! I'm also a big fan of the Model 10's and 64's, I still wear a 64 on duty these days, maybe the best duty gun I've ever been issued. The trigger is stock but smooth as glass, and the single-action pull is target grade, almost too light. I liked the gun so much I bought two more, both neutered to DAO.

I've thought about polishing them up or having them bead-blasted to dress them up a bit, but I have resisted, so far. To me, they epitomize the "working gun", sturdy and simple yet elegant tools, made for life on the street. I've been shooting K-frame 38's for thirty years, and while I have a few others I like, nothing feels as natural in my hand as one of these.

How much of a culture shock was it moving from New York to Texas?

Nice display, I still carry a 64 RB pencil barrel circa 1970 when I work in uniform, causes some young smart *** types to ask what regiment I was in back in the civil war. Some of them have never even held a revolver! They don't give me too much grief cause after all I am the boss. My wife still packs a K frame on the job (she's an SVU detective) and her M36. One sergeant young enough to be her grandson asked why she carried the K frame when such wonderful newer guns that carried all that ammo were available, she told him "because I can hit with it"!

How'd you manage to switch revolvers so often? The job made carrying a different gun almost impossible.

I just used the 2 4" model 64's and the three inch model 64

The revolver policy was a little different, Glocks changed everything, I departed NYPD and went to another agency.

I love Smith revolvers and my safariland comp II or III speedloaders, I do tons of revolver shooting,(reload too)

My 64's still are with me and used for HD as well.

Sal, how was the PD as regards to grips, were you allowed to install aftermarket grips while still in uniform or did you have to stick to the wooden ones? We routinely removed the factory stocks and installed Pachmayr Presentation grips on our 686's.

As long as the grips did not interfere with the use of speed loaders you can use any grip. I used the uncle mikes grips, feel real good.

most guys used pacs or uncle mikes.

I have some pacs at home even the small presentation grips which they stopped making years ago and like alot.

Also I found some sile rubber grips as well which are nice as well.

Those are all great looking revolvers! I carry on duty also, usually a model 10 or 64 with a 2 or 4 inch barrel. The 64s are heavy barrels and the 4 inch 10s are pencil barrels. Being in plain clothes and one of the firearms instructors, I can do it....as long as my issued glock is around, my backup piece is my choice. I take some ribbing too but shoot better than all the young guys, so they leave me alone.

This is a 1946, has a badge number stamped in the grip, was sold to the NYPD officer in July of '46, Ive got his name and dates. Kinda cool to me!!

One of the greatest things about the K-frames is that everyone who makes grips started with that one, and the variety is almost endless. I bet I've spent as much on grips over the years as I have on holsters, and I have a box full of old unused holsters.

When I was teaching the revolver to new (often female) recruits, I settled on the Pachmayr Compac grip as the one I used most. I have smallish hands and long fingers, like most of the women did, and that was the grip that most shot well. When teaching kids to shoot, I'd lay out a selection of unloaded guns on a table, and ask them to find the one that felt the best in their hands. The open-backed Compac was nearly always the one they preferred.

I change revolver handles like most other folks change socks, and since I have a lot of K-frames, I have a lot of options. At the moment my work gun wears a nice pair of Spegel grips in Bolivian Rosewood, they're just too nice to leave on the BBQ gun. I was afraid wearing them at work would beat them up, but the wood is so dense they seem to be holding up just fine. When the weather goes south I'll probably switch back to the goodyears.

That 5946 has to be one of the best, most reliable weapons ever made. A tad on the heavy side by today's standards, but it will even feed empty hulls. I have owned two, down to one now, plus a 5943 and the seldom seen 6944 with round trigger guard. My 5946 is one of the RCMP guns imported back into the USA, and has the slightly shorter LEO trigger. They are indeed like a bottom feeding revolver.
