Default Model 14 classic

How does the model 14 classic compare to older 14's & K 38 Masterpieces when it comes to accuracy?

I'd bet 99% of the guys shooting them can't tell the difference.

Ugly but very functional MIM parts. ILS. Outsourced laminate stocks. No pinned barrel. I can only hope they are still cutting the rifling to be friendly with WC loads and not the newer EDM rifling but I don’t know on that one. The front sights don’t seem to be quite the same but that may just be my eyes or be subjective anyways.

I like my new series classic 18-7 every bit as much,or more, than my older 18-3.I didn't care too much for the grips, but didn't like the original grips on the old one either-both sets have been changed. The older one got a set of extended Spegels, the new one got a set of older targets,to go with the target features of the gun.

I have never owned a Model 14 other than the 14-8 classic that I bought about 4 weeks ago but I have to say it is one of the finest handguns that I have purchased in my 37 years of buying handguns. I have however replaced the grips with a set of Grashorns Elk Magna's and the main spring with a Wolff No.1 also the trigger return spring with a Wolff 13lb. replacement. For over 5 years I have been shooting a Ruger 357 Anniversary that I had tuned, refinished and the barrel hand lapped and considered it the best gun I have ever owned until now that I have this Model 14-8. The accuracy of this new gun is fantastic. With standard 158gr. lead round nose I can shoot regular 2 1/2" to 3.0" groups off hand at 25 yards almost evyerytime. Most of the time 3 out of the 5 are in 1 1/2". After tomorrow night I should have close to 900 rounds through it. The IL and MIM have gone almost notice free to me with as well as the gun opperates and shoots. I dont know why but I'm going to try some 125gr HP +P loads tomorrow for the fun of it. S&W gets a big plus one from me on this new release.

Question How is the blued finish on the new Classic 14?

Does the polish and blue of the new Classic 14's compare with the old ones, pre Bangor Punta or at least the Pinned and Recessed older 14's? I bought a new heavy underlug Model 14 on a special order, sight unseen in about 1993. The barrel was NOT polished out well, with visible tooling marks and scratches straight from the box. Had to send a letter directly to George Shultz (CEO at the time) to shame them into fixing it, the dealer said "no warrranty". S&W made it right but it was a big hassle so I am still leery of ordering any new Blued S&W sight unseen. Just wonderin'..... I hate a crummy looking low-polish bluing job on a new expensive piece.

I dont think we will ever see the finish that S&W used to put on thier guns as well as the finish Colt put on the Pythons on a production gun again but my new S&W 14-8 is very nice. Nicer than the blue on my new Colt SAA's that have been recently purchased and on par with the 1970's area S&W Model 25. I paid $724.00 shipped for my new Classic but would have gone for a good used one between $500.00/$600.00 if it was a FTF.
