Red face I'm Afraid I Need Counseling Because Its Gotten To The Point .......

...where I'm half afraid to enter the firearms for sale forum. It seems every single time I go in there to see what's available, I usually lay awake at night thinking about a S&W revolver I saw that I want. Today, after just mailing payment for yet another revolver, I visited that forum and noticed a beautiful model 29 that is driving me crazy as I type this. I had one of these years ago and how I long to have it back. I'm now trying my best to not even look to see if its still available. My wife is screaming at me and I feel like I'm going to have a nervous breakdown. She keeps yelling that I'm "out of control"! Help me out here people - what's happening to me ?!

Hoarding behavior, gotta watch that. I try to get rid of stuff I don't use for the most part. Too many guns is just as bad as anything else except that they store easier.

I hear ya. Here in ca we have a law that only one handgun can be purchased every 30 days. My ffl does not like it when I have enough guns sitting in his safe to get me to December.

LOL! I ended up "taking a peek" and e-mailing the seller. I have to go check today's mail and see if there's any new credit card applications! I keep telling myself "one more won't hurt"! Maybe I should resign myself to the fact that I'm diseased or something - where's all the valium when you need it?!

Look at it like this: the way the world economy is going, guns are a pretty sound investment right now. Stocks are tanking, I missed the boat on gold, but heck at least I can have fun shooting my Smiths when the house of cards crumbles and we are all left pennyless.

We have the same rediculous law here in NJ!

My wife wishes she never told me she likes revolvers, now that is all I buy!

I have avoided the for sale board for months at a time because I did not want to spend more. Sometimes I see one for sale and hope some one else buys it before I cave in and reach for the keyboard. Even the discussion boards are bad because I'll see something that motivates me to go look for one.

We all think that the above mentioned behavior is normal, including the Wife. You need to see someone about this feeling that you are doing something wrong! Did that help at all?

If ya seek counseling be sure your psycologist doesn't shoot or collect S&Ws. Your and their addiction will just get worse......

I know several people in the field whose compulsive handgun addiction is worse than ours... There is just no known cure.....

Incurable, insatiable, and made worse that my wife has the same affliction, though we consider it a normal part of life, like eating or breathing FREEDOM. Enjoy!! Be Safe,

I posted that I was afraid to go to the local guns shows as one dealer kept waving 44 special S&W's. Well this show he didn't have any. Then there was another dealer who had a cherry 24-3 3" lew horton round butt.
That one did follow me home. But it was the rem 870 wingmaster in riot gun configuration That I bought for $225 out the door. I won't be going to any gun shows anytime soon. I think for both our sakes your wife should never get in touch with mine, as we'd be in deep doo doo.

The car just broke down again. I have just enough $$ in bank to fix it.
I have not had a credit card for 14 years. All deals done in cash.
My collection is my 'steel 401K' . I only hope to live long enough to
enjoy it and pass it on to my now 13 year old son.

If the wife is screaming either you need to stop buying guns on
credit, or let the wife go.
I am divorced now 5 years.
Sometimes I do get lonely and guns are not good company.

Did you have any compulsions prior to the Smith addiction?

Guns are just guns. Don't hurt yourself financially to own another one.

I got these guns for my wife. What a trade!

Good luck

Allen-Frame doesn't need counseling - he needs a dogs shocking collar around his neck every time he goes near a gun show or a gun......

the way things are ,buy guns (at a decent price) and gold.a little ammo won't hurt either.they are a good investment!it beats trying to put 40 harley's in your garage for resale down the road.

Yeah, mu wife told me i need help too. It is not just the S&W thing, I also have a .22 rifle thing. I even get up in the middle of the night to check the board to see if someone posted something that is a great deal... What happens if someone sees it first inthe morning and beats me? My wife laughs at me. She sayd as long as you use cash and its a "good deal"( whatever that means) do it. I got a good one.

I keep telling my wife that it's my 401-G plan since my 401-K does nothing but lose money. Sometimes I barely break even, but I have NEVER lost money on a gun!

Actually the only cure is to keep buying. That way you won't have to stress out all the time. That is what we were referring to, right??

As a young cop, I had to sell guns to feed wife, and kids. As an old retired cop, with an FFL, you have to be able to have the money, to purchase firearms. You really can't buy too many on what the eagle brings you, every month.

I feel your pain. You should feel mine, everytime a new dealer flyer or catalog comes in, with the prices I see.

Sounds like to me you are perfectly in control, and I used to be a licensed counselor. Now, what you are in control of may need some further examination. Perhaps you have too much disposable income? If so there is a quick, easy solution to that problem. Send your disposable to me. Seems like I'm a little short for my next gun purchase.

What good will another gun do if you've enslaved yourself to credit card debt to purchase it? That gun on credit will end up costing you much more than the purchase price. Wouldn't that money be better spent on range time and ammo practicing with a gun or guns you already own?

Too many guns is like too much of anything else good... It may feel nice for the instant gratification, but it almost always turns out bad. Now bullets and magazines, that's a different story. One can never have enough or too many of either.

My wife is looking for a gun rehab for me, she is a nurse and sees my doctor from time to time and told him jokingly. Ended up selling him a gun I was getting rid of and now texts me about once a week to discuss what hes bought and what i have bought.

What good does already being enslaved to debt and credit do if there's no instant gratification ! By the way, my debt is no worse than 90% of Americans. Oh, and by the way, I've never had a good roll in the sack turn out bad after the instant gratification !

I did e-mail the seller (a very gracious and polite seller), dilly dallied a bit at work today, and now see it sold to another forum member. I guess I'm out of the woods for the moment!

PA Reb, I totally agree with you. Buy your toys with someone else's money then pay the credit card. With the way things are going the dollar being inflated and all we are probably really getting our money's worth. Stock market's down the hole again, people buying gold and silver to have a hedge against hard times. At this point I'd rather have $1800 (current price per troy oz of gold or thereabouts) of food, gas, and the werewithall to protect what I have. Frank

I would imagine you are an obsessive/compulsive personality. I am the same way and it is no laughing matter. For the past three weeks I have been obsessing over a couple of different guns I want. I have sat at the computer for hours doing research. My wife just flips out on me at times because of it. I have never bought anything in my life without agonizing over it for days to make sure I was making the right choice. And usually, over researching something is as bad as no research at all as you never, ever get an unanimous opinion on anything.

This kind of stuff can lead to strains in your relationship with your wife and leave you miserable all the time because of that inner nagging for that one "perfect" gun you just saw. Short of actual counseling, I would try and limit myself to looking so much. If you don't see it, you are not going to want it.

Maybe you should stay off the internet for a while and enjoy what you do have.

My addiction motivates me to work harder at my second job to get that next fix. Just when I think I have the missing link in my accumulated arsenal (I’m not a collector) one of you guys start talking about some sweet wheel gun bought for a song, that is the best balanced shooter yet. I am lucky, my wife does not know when I purchase a new addition until she goes to the range with me and sees it for the first time. She can’t yell at me over the sound of rounds going down range, and usually she likes what I purchase.

Default Sad.....

I'm sad to say, you've come to the WRONG place for counseling and guidance on this problem.

I've found this to be a great "self help" group...but the only help available just seems to feed the sickness!

I'm going to take the OP as an honest, serious admission. Many of us wouldn't be reading this site if we didn't identify with your experience. We joke about owning too many guns and looking for the next one. However, as others have already noted, if gun purchases are putting you and your family in financial difficulty, it's time to stop the joking. If it's destroying your marriage, same thing.

As one generally "in the business", I'm come to believe that professional "counselors" are often over-rated. While it's often useful to talk to another objective person for perspective, there isn't any substitute for intentionally developing accountability relationships...at least when it comes to modifying our behaviors. It can be as simple as making a covenant to tell a trusted friend about your struggle and entering an agreement with him to "keep tabs" on your purchases. Set some personal guidelines about when and how you'll put another treasure in the safe and have your friend help you stick to them.

Thanks for your honesty in sharing. Your story hits pretty close to home.

Good luck

This photo is going to do wonders for me. Everytime my wife belly aches about me having too many guns, I'm gonna show her this.

I got's a long way to go before I'm in that much trouble...or that lucky as the case may be.

Collecting and hoarding are so different. I've watched the TV shows about hoarders... easy to tell the difference. I saved plastic margarine and cottage cheese tubs. My wife said it was time for an intervention... I tossed all but two of each. The relief was instantaneous. Like my guns, knives, model trains, etc, I was a collector... not a hoarder... you have to save used diapers, domestic animal remains and waste, old home delivery pizza, etc, boxes - and the like - everywhere - to be a 'hoarder'. You also have to be nutty as a fruitcake. Every gun collector I know seems just as normal as I am. Where was that 29 again??

Stainz

PS Allen-frame: My wife started my S&W collection nine years ago - with a 625-7MG. I'm up to, well, more than your displayed collection - by a few - and stll have the wife! Keeper!! The CC gets paid off every month. It can be done. Living in an older house - driving now 7 yr old cars (My truck was 12.5 yr, my car 14 yr - when sold! Both still ran fine. Don't know why I sold the truck!). Also - limited dining out. There are ways to afford those gun purchases. Always remember - you have two kidneys!
