Hammer Time

Hi all, I have a model 15-10 in need of a hammer. Previous owner fancied himself a gunsmith and now it has push off. Latest hammers I seem to find are for a 15-8 and I don't know if it'll fit. My question for the experts is what versions of the 15 or other models may fit my 15-10? Thanks all.

If you are sure the SA cocking notch in the hammer is not damaged (untouched), trigger replacement may be the way to proceed. Examine the cocking notch in the hammer and the trigger bevel with a magnifier.
You may, however, be able to salvage the existing trigger by re-sharpening the bevel at the proper angle. If you have the proper tools (stone), using the proper technique, you can do this on the bench top.

To eliminate other possible contributors, the first thing to check, if you are capable of doing so, is to make sure the mainspring strain screw is tight, and has not been altered. Also examine the rebound slide spring. Sometimes incorrectly referred to as the trigger return spring. If this OEM coil spring has been cut, or an aftermarket spring has been installed, this can contribute to the push off condition. Restoring the proper spring/spring tension, and/or re-sharpening the damaged trigger could restore function without the purchase of new parts.

I believe any current production, centerfire, k-frame MIM hammer will work in your gun. Keep in mind the hammer may need to be fit to your particular revolver. Hammers are not considered "drop in" parts. To verify compatability, you could contact S&W Customer Service. 1-800-331-0852

Thank you so much! I just assumed it was the hammer, in no way am I well versed in Smith revolvers. Looks like I've got some more looking to do. I already put in a factory new main spring, I've got a rebound spring on hand to try as well. I gotta quit buying sight unseen.

If it's only a push off condition involved, it's a fairly easy fix, especially if the hammer has not been altered. If the cocking notch on the hammer has been stoned or altered the hammer is toast.

You can also have push off if the trigger return spring is too weak (often guys used to cut down their springs and they would over do it). $5 fix. Also make sure the main spring is not kinked and the strain screw is all the way in.
