Default 686 owners and 627 owners its time to do battle, convince me which is better

as im sure you all have seen i am torn between a 4 inch 686 plus and a 627 pro. im brett favreing it right now i cant make up my mind. I know you are all fiercely opinionated about your firearms ( i am too i love it) and want you to convince me which is better (with pictures and personal opinions and experiences) for occasional ccw but mainly range and HD and potentially hunting use. There can be no loser here, i look forward to seeing and hearing about all of your guns. Holster and belt suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well. For reference i am 6 foot 1 215lbs.

I don't care for the 7-shot gun. It's in no man's land for me - too many rounds for gun games and not as common for speedloaders, and one fewer round than the 627 if "high" capacity is important. Of course games wasn't one of your considerations.

Of the two I take the 627. I'd opt for a 6-shot 686 personally. Actually, I opted for both, but bought the 686 first.

You can really 'stage' the 7 shot 686....nice gun...am really sorry I sold my 4"...but I did keep the 2 1/2" 7 shot....8" plates at 25 yds...

I love my 686+ 3". I've never had the pleasure of even handling a 627. Its probably a good thing cause I'd probably want that too!

I own a 627 Performance Center and it is my favorite "go-to" gun. Super sweet shooter and it really turns the heads. Everyone wants to know what the cool revolver with the slab sides and long, angled underlug is at the range. 686s are a dime a dozen, but you don't see a 627 PC every day. But for CCW, neither the 627 or the 686 would be my first choice. I'd rather have the 2.5" K-Frame Model 19 or Model 66.

I prefer N frames, so I'd take the 627 every time. That out of the way, the L frames are excellent guns, too. I have had one since they were introduced and it still shoots great after a good many rounds down range. It comes down to personal preference. You kinda have to get one of each and work out what you like best.

Carry my 686-5 almost everyday in a DeSantis rig with no problem. Got away from the .45 auto several years ago and just like the 1 extra. Haven't needed any of them yet (thank God). Only time I know it is there is when I am buckling my seat belt. And all the other blue ones stay in thes safe staying pristine. Ain't nothin wrong with "7 puffers" or your other choice either. I just don't have one of them. I am 6'6' and 255 lbs.

Check out thebeltman for a belt. I've heard nothing but good things about them. They'd probably be my first choice. Expensive though.

Really ???? It was the 357 that started it all.

Anyway, this discussion is really probably closely drawn around the age of the responders as most of the old farts like me see no need for 7 or 8 rounds in a revolver as 6 has worked for us for more decades then we care to admit to. When we wanted 8 shots we bought a 1911 or we really went over the top and bought a Browning HP with a 13 round magazine.

The L frame is a great revolver but it will never take the place of the N frame in my heart.

That's JMO, of course. But, yes, I believe the L frame is ideal for the 357 Magnum, & the N frame is overkill. I much prefer the DA of an L frame, compared to the DA of a 357 N frame (I rarely thumb-cock a DA revolver). I could be wrong, have been before, but didn't the N frame begin life as a 44 Spl, or 44 Russian? I agree, six shots is plenty in a revolver, but I do have a seven shot 686, that extra hole in the cylinder does make the cylinder a little lighter, thus a little more "lively", less mass to rotate with your trigger finger (makes the DA SLIGHTLY lighter). Heck, if you like N frame 357's, more power to you, sir, I just prefer L frames. Truth be told, K frames actually have the best DA triggers, but the L's aren't far behind. Oh, BTW, I'm an old phart, too.

Combine the best of both the 686 and 627 and get a 4" Colt Python. Let the flaming begin.

Not gonna' flame you, Pythons's are beautiful revolvers, but, around here, Python's sell for 3X the price of a good used 686. The Python lockwork is more fragile than S&W's, it's getting hard to find anyone who can fix a Colt revolver, & I never could warm up to the stacking of the Colt DA system. You do realize that L frames are almost exactly the same size & configuration as the Python, but with a better DA trigger & equal SA (can't get any better than a Python SA trigger)? Again, my opinion only.

All the revolvers I now own are S&W and I love every one of them. I've also owned many a Colt Python over the years and can definitely say they are as smooth as silk in both SA and DA - nothing even comes close. My first choice however, in the above two listed guns would be the 627.

All I can say is that my S&W 686 (no dash) with 4 inch barrel is by far my favorite handgun that I own. It is highly accurate and has the best trigger I have ever felt.

If you aren't hung up on the caliber I would suggest you get a 44 special or one of the 45's. A big ole' 40+ caliber bullet at 850 to 1000 fps makes a fine target gun and in my opinion is better for home defense. Give it some thought, you won't go wrong either way.

If I had to choose between the 2 you mentioned, I'd go with the n-frame.

My only 686/686P - a 2004 'Stocking Dealer Exclusive' 5" half lug 7-shooter that came with the HiViz and Ahrends grips. Also shown is one of my 627's, a 4" 627 Pro, with HiViz and Ahrends Retro Targets added.

I love both. But... guess which one has cobwebs on it? Hint: It only chambers seven. I really like the 627's. Eight-bangers rule! Of course, I'm not as old as some folks around here... I'm only 63!

The one and ONLY failing in the N frame .357 magnum is the slightly shorter cylinder than the K/L frame. That aside, the N frame will absorb more recoil, hold eight shots in the cylinder, and the forcing cone is built like a tank. I say buy the five inch 627, find a stock/grip that fits your hand, and shoot the hell out of it. Or buy the middle child that is lighter, skinnier, and only a six or seven shotty. Python. I would trade my Python for a P/R 27 esspecially a 3.5" 27... Mmmm..... N frames....

Yes, you can fire the 627 sans moon clip. It isn't necessary to shoot but does make reloading faster.

Personally, I vote for the 627. They are both large revolvers, so I think the extra round is worth the slightly larger size. On the flip side, if you want to use speed loaders, they are easier to find for the 686+.

Both of these are fairly heavy revolvers. With a standard .38, the recoil is non-existant. The large N-frame is really noticeably bigger to me. You just don't need it. Whatever job you're looking to do, if you can't do it with 7 shots, you can't with 8 either.

Get the 686. It will be a classic. The 627 frame is only necessary for heavier calibers than we are talking about here.

If I could only have one, and it included concealed carry use, I would go with the 686+. It's a poor CC choice but better than an N-frame. For any and all other considerations give me the 627.

I own a few L-frames. A couple are commemoratives, my CS1 and the only one that I really shoot, my L-comp.

However, I truly LOVE N-frames. I have about a 16:1 ratio of N to L frames. The 8 shot family of 357 Magnum revolvers are wonderful examples of the firearms makers art. The 27/327/627 wheel guns are high quality revolvers.

If you went for one of the 327 offerings, you could have an 8 shot N-frame that weighs less than the 4" SSR.

And of course if you are a fan of carbon steel revolvers , there are 6 variations of the 8 shot model 27. The blue steel 3 1/2" is one of my favorites. It carries well on the belt or inside the waistband.

Actually this has been a fun thread to read and of course I expected different points of views when I made my first post. I think S&W got it right with the L frame and I'm happy they made it. I still can't over look my 27-2 5 inch P&R revolver as being one of the best balanced reviolvers I ever held or fired.

The beauty of this hobby is we can all over indulge ourselves in what we like and it's not a sin to like any S&W revolver and to treat it like it's a holy grail but we just need to remember that it just happens to be OUR holy grail and not everyones.

I've got both. Neither is better. They're just different.

Do you like the feel of and L or an N frame better?

I have a 686 no dash 6" and dearly love the gun. I have a 627 model of 1989 5.5" barrel and I dearly love that gun too!

Which is my favorite? aaaahhhhhh...............I think the 627, but don't quote me on that!

You need to try a wheelgun with moonclips sometime, you'll see why we love them.

I had a 686 for many, many years... until I got my 627 Pro back in January. Bought it as a carry gun and it gets used quite frequently for that purpose.

Can anyone recommend some good front and rear fixed night sights?

For me the answer to this question would depend a lot on what I was going to do with the revolver. My first ever handgun is a 27 6.5" no-dash given me by my father when I was a high-school kid back in the 1960s, and I still have the gun and used it extensively back then for everything from hunting to plinking to personal defense.

I acquired a 627 5" PC gun a few years back and it's excellent for woods carry and range use, but is basically "illegal" for IDPA and IPSC revolver shooting. If I wanted to use a revolver in one of those games the way to go would, IMHO, be the 686SSR. Or a nice 66 in 4".

N Frame caliber should start with 4...............

Really ???? It was the 357 that started it all
Strange, I could have sworn the .45LC/ACP and .44 SPL Handejectors were built on N Frames. My Model 1917 (.45 ACP) was built in 1919, and I could be mistaken, but I think that was a few years before the .357 debuted.

I'd like to point out something that may or may not have impact on a choice. I have a 619 (L frame if you are not familiar with it) and some years ago owned a Model 27. Although the 27 is an outstanding revolver, I have always liked K frames better, for size and balance. The L frame (to me) was the perfect balance between the two; sturdy enough for continuous magnum loads, small enough for balance, size and weight. I have found that the L frame handles recoil just as well as my old N frame. But more importantly for me, the size of the L frame was really what won me over; I am retired military, and for years I pretty well owned, qualified and fired autos. After I retired, I found I wanted to return to the revolver fold, and found that my L framed 619 was an extremely effective transition from years of handling autos due to it's balance and size, and vice versa. Just a little food for thought from a slightly differnent view. I love the 627s, but I think the 686 with a 4" barrel is great compromise of power, balance, handling and size.

Also, since moon clips have been mentioned, I have to say that I'm sold on them. Since I have owned my old 1917, I have become pretty impressed with them. There are a few companies out there that do moonclip conversions for revovlers, and I have thought about having it done; I like them better than speedloaders. Those that use them in revolvers swear by them, they are a fast and easy way to load, but you must be carefull about bending them.

Will be interested to hear which you decide on, you can't really go wrong with either!

I've got a 4" 686+ and a 5" PC 627, the 627 is my favorite revolver of all. 8 shots, the smooth PC trigger, recoil absorbing frame, it's the ultimate 357. Not that there is anything wrong with a 686. Having both is the only solution.

I have a 6 round 686 and a 8 round 627PC. The much less costly 686 shoots every bit as well and accurately as the 627PC.

To put things in perspective:

4" 686 SKU 164222 39.7 oz MSRP $849

4" 627 Pro SKU 178014 41.2 oz MSRP $969

Those are current prices - from their website. It translates to less than a 'Benjamin' at the typical dealer. A big 1.5 oz heavier, too.

Dodobird1589, now for the rest of the story, just go ahead and buy both because we all know that is what the final result will be

Agree 100%.
Especially true in DA shooting as the greater mass of the N-frame cylinder in the small caliber can certainly be felt.
That said, I, too, prefer the six rather than the 7-shot versions.

I have the 586 and the M&PR8 and I prefer the performance of the M&P but I like the looks of the 586. I say go for the 627. It has all of the 586/686 has and then some minus the extra weight.

New to the forum and I snagged up a 627 pro and will have it in a couple of days. It is my first revolver and probably won't be my last. At some point will probably end up getting another one.

Default If I want....

If I want/need more than 6 shots I'll pick up my semi auto. I wouldn't fight if someone wanted to give me a 627, but I own a 686.

I love both. But... guess which one has cobwebs on it? Hint: It only chambers seven. I really like the 627's. Eight-bangers rule! Of course, I'm not as old as some folks around here... I'm only 63!

I have the first Model of the Performance Center 627 with a 5" barrel and I have a 686. While my 627 is something to enjoy looking at and handling, my 686 shoots equally well and is therefore more practical.

Let me throw out my vote for the 327 TRR8. Scandium frame, stainless cylinder, 8-shot with moon clips, Performance Center trigger job, gold bead front sight, 5" barrel, and it's a SHOOTER. Probably lighter than the 686+ as well. Love mine - absolutely my favorite revolver.
