S&W Going Cheap on Carrying Cases
i just received my new S&W 649 yesterday and was very disappointed to see it came in a cardboard box with Smith and Wesson logo, etc. instead of a real carrying case. You would think after spending so much money, they could provide a real case. Having looked at Glocks and Springfield XDM's before settling on Smith and Wesson, I was expecting a nice case such as the aforementioned guns come in. Why the skimping with the cases? I also have a 686 on order, supposed to be here in next couple of days. I suppose it will come in a cardboard box too.
It kind of diminishes their image as a top notch gun manufacturer in my opinion, to go cheap on the carrying case.
Any options out there for getting a custom carrying case for the aforementioned guns I have purchased?

You can buy the regular blue plastic S&W boxes on their website for cheap. $10.58 Maybe they are selling them out in favor of a newer cheaper box.

I'm glad that S&W is going back to cardboard boxes just like the old days. I find the plastic boxes too big and bulky to store. Plus, I would think that cardboard is less expense than the plastic ones. Maybe, it will help slow down the spiraling cost of S&W firearms.

Some people actually use the cases that the guns come in?
Whether S&W ships the gun in a plastic case or a cardboard box or a plastic bag, they can't please everyone I suppose. There are plenty of cases and bags out there for purchase that are 10x more functional than the little blue plastic cases.

I'm with you on that one, the plastic boxes are just annoying and once you have more than a few a pain to store.

For me, I am glad that the majority of effort is spent on the firearm and not the box it came in. To me the box is minor, first shot reliability is of far greater importance.

I don't even have that many guns and I still have too many plastic boxes that I'll never touch again.

I don't store them in the boxes anyway. They are on racks in the gun safe.
It is better for the air to circulate and prevents moisture build up in the boxes.

Mine S&Ws all live in Bore-Store snuggies.
All those plastic boxes do mothing more than take up room in my garage.
As far as I'm concerned, they could pack the guns in throwaway cardboard boxes and use any saved funds to improve their QC department.
