Smith and Wesson 617-2 (Price)
I was recently offered a S&W 617-2 for $475. It's the 10 shot model, SS, made in '97 or '98. My KBB of gun values lists it at (in my opinion) an absurdly low price ($375) for 95% example.
I'm not sure who's off base here, KBB or the seller?
If you guys think its a good deal, I'll buy it, but I just think I don't have the info to jump on it myself, at this point. But then again, that's why I'm a member of S&W forum

475 is a good price-the book is best used by dealers using it as a basis for the percentage that want to pay.Disregard it.
All that said,I prefer the 10-shot guns with a stainless cylinder. That 617-2 is probably alloy.

In my opinion, nothing in print accurately reflects current selling prices, the best way to do that is to search the online auction sites. Be sure to look at what a particular model has actually been SELLING for, not what the sellers are ASKING.

$475 is a very good price for a 617 - 6 or 10 shot.

Here's my track on the 4-inch 10 shooter from another thread.

Thank you everybody! It is the 10 shot alloy cylinder, and I'm picking it up tomorrow, thanks to this thread.
If I want to later, can I have the alloy cylinder changed out by S&W for a stainless cylinder? Maybe even unfluted?

$475 for any 617 that has all the pieces attached and actually fires....is a good price. You can't touch one for that price where I live. Maybe if it has been ran-over by a freight train you could.
The book is worthless, save for one reason. Dealers use it to convince would-be sellers that the value of their gun is much lower than they thought. I know...I've tried it plenty of times. Like posted above...you can get a more realistic value by keeping an eye on the websites.

I've got a deal working for a 617 for $589 OTD. Had a hard time locating one. It's got the stock Hogue black grip and is a six-incher. How can I tell what version of the 617 it is? There is no IL. Appreciate any identifying details. Thanks.

Open the cylinder and look on the flat inside the crane (hinge). There should be 617-? stamped on the flat surface.
