S&W Collectibles
Don't know if this is the proper forum for this question---But-What do you all consider the most desired and collectible of the more modern S&W revolvers? I'm really looking at the pre-lock era.

The original 627pc bloodwork would be towards the top of the list

Fixed sight 629 with 3-inch (or maybe 4-inch?) barrel. Very few of these.
I would also look at the rarely seen 631 in .32 H&R Magnum. Barely 5000 made in total, and four different varieties within that range. Probably the rarest is the round butt adjustable sight Kit Gun with a four inch barrel. According to SCSW, about 40 were made in 1998. If you ever seen one of those, just buy it without question. |
For me it would be stainless P&R models, but I'm not really a "collector."

the 631 or the 331 in 32 h&r magnum 2 inch is the bees knees. This 4 inch 631 I bought was from a forum member who had one post and just ONE S&W revolver.

Peyton, thanks for the pics. I had never seen a 631 4" .32 Kit Gun or even an image. Now at least (and at last!) I know what I'm looking for. :)

For me any S&W revolver I don't have is one I want -- and in some cases more than one of each

I like building compete sets:

I don't know about the most desired and collectible but I suspect the PC 66-4 Super K would be up there. I know it's the one newer model I most want.

3" Model 29 or 629-1 and my model 625-4 SAC are 3 models that come to my mind...Just my opinion. Their prices are going thru the roof.

While not pinned nor recessed I would have to say the 4" 24-3, .44 special is certainly in the 'collector' definition, 2,625 made in 1983. Also the 4" 16-4, .32 H&R Magnum, only 8,800 of the total run of 4, 6 and 8 3/8" models made from about 1988 to 1992, I believe the 4" was only made in '90-'91 but could be off a year.
As with considering any 'collectable' try for as near NIB condition as possible, they will always hold value longer than lesser grades, all else being equal. The trick is to get them NIB and then have the patience it takes to keep them in that condition, that is the hard part. RD |
How about the Model 45.

I guess it depends on your definition of Modern. However if I had to pick one. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Back in 1973 I saw a revolver on display in Lew Horton's shop. I fell in love with it but was too young at the time to buy it. I briefly chatted with one of the salesmen and was told that S&W produced 10,000 of this particular Commemorative revolver. So I was not too worried about finding one as soon as I was old enough. The problem is I was looking at a Deluxe Texas Ranger. Over the years I learned the following 10,000 of the Texas Ranger Commemoratives were produced in three different configurations. 2,000 of those were shipped with just a fitted presentation case and no knife. The remaining 8,000 had knives with serial numbers matching the revolvers. These came with presentations cases that held the revolver and knife. Of those 8,000 sets, 50 revolvers were master engraved and sold as Deluxe Texas Ranger Commemoratives. Here is mine http://calzaretta.com/scans/texas%20ranger%20small.jpg Here is the original tear sheet http://calzaretta.com/scans/tr-ad-1.jpg http://calzaretta.com/scans/tr-ad-2.jpg It took me 15 years to find the revolver pictured above. I consider myself quite lucky that I found it so fast considering only 50 were produced. |
