Question Sell a lock model to re-purchase without lock?

I like my 340 M&P. Considering all the features, it's one helluva J-Frame. Great sights, great finish, light weight and .357 capable. I bought one pretty soon after they hit market a few years ago.

Now the no-lock models are available, which kinda sucks for owners of lock models.

Part of me wants to sell mine and start over with a no-lock. But that would of course be at a cost. I can't sell mine for what I paid ~ and a new one will cost more than what I'd gain from the sale.

I can't say the lock has given me any trouble. I just dislike the appearance and the premise of the lock to begin with.

Should I have a gunsmith disable the lock? Is this easily done? It will still look like a lock gun, but I'd have the peace of mind of no lock on the gun.

Thoughts?

You can have the lock removed and a forum member sells a plug to fill the hole.

If the lock has not given you any problems I would just keep it. I have a Model 63 w/thelock and no problems ever.

None of the above. Buy the "Plug" from Bullseye Smith and gut the stupid thing out. That's what I do.

OPTION #4:
Keep yours with the lock (buy the plug) and use it for the range and an extra, and buy the NL version for carry.

Me?

I kept my original M&P 340 ... which has not exhibited any problems with the lock (ILS) ... and bought one of the new ones without the lock to complement it.

While I'm still carrying & using the original one, I'll probably eventually end up using it more for "range beater" use, while I continue to try and wear it out.

I like the M&P J-frame models primarily for the XS front night sight and the U-shaped rear notch. It makes for easier and faster sight acquisition than the painted front ramps on my other handful of J's (which includes a pair of 642-1's).

I like the PVD coated stainless steel cylinder (not being particularly enamored of the titanium cylinders).

I like the stronger Scandium aluminum frame, too.

While I don't mind having the option to use Magnum loads (and I sometimes do, for quals & practice), I primarily carry some of the same assorted +P loads in my M&P's as I do my other +P-capable J's. FWIW, when I was originally testing some Magnum loads in my M&P 340, I found a couple which exhibited bullet pull in my gun, so checking each gun with each brand of carry ammunition is still a good idea, I'd think.

If I were planning to shoot a lot of Magnum loads out of a 5-shot revolver, I'd either take my SP101 DAO out of the safe or I'd pick up one of the steel J's chambered for Magnum ammunition. The Airlite's and the M&P's can be a bit rough on the shooter.

Suit yourself, though.

I voted to sell, but that is only because I prefer the no-lock revolvers. However, I would buy one with the lock if I could not find one without.

Since you are already in the revolver, I would just disable the lock and move on with life. Pretty easy.

Yes, I know of at least 2 instances where an ILS has disabled a gun. Unintentionally.

My views are one as a user, not a collector.

Regards,
Greyson

Something else to consider is that if you purchased the gun new, it will have the lifetime warranty, whereas if you purchase one used you will not have that warranty.

Either keep the one with the lock and use it as a beater and buy a new no-lock version, or sell the one with the lock and use the funds to buy a new no-lock version.

Keep the one you have and don't worry about the lock. My 5 shot has the lock and I could care less about it.

keep the IL, nothing has changed since you bought it, it works. Buying older NL guns is far more risky than your IL failing, chances are far greater of a failure with older NL than your newer IL, thats a fact. Just scan this forum and the failures are clearly stacked against older NL's... I'm a relatively new shooter, I've bought, owned and shot all kinds of S&W guns from the last 40 years, the only failures I've experienced were with my older NL guns. But if you are looking for an excuse to buy another gun... whatever it takes, go for it.

I doubt the lock would ever cause a problem, assuming you keep it unlocked and plug it. Having said that, I dont buy any S&W's with the lock, just cant stand it, thats my personal preference though...

FWIW, I believe the OP is talking about a NEW NL. The 340 was never available without a lock, and S&W does runs of J frames without the IL.

IF your 340 has given you NO trouble in regards to the IL, why are we doing this poll. The answer is simple, keep it.

If it's served you well and you like it, don't sell it - fix it and buy a new one as well. Surely, you have some other guns you could sell to fund the new 340NL.

I traded mine with a lock for one without the lock. It cost me $100, but I feel better.
