Pawn Shop Mountain Gun
Haven't been around here much of late, haven't had too much going on in the S&W world. Still, I just thought this might be the place where this tale would be appreciated.
A little while back, I had bought a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt. Nice enough firearm but I found that while I loved .45 Colt, I was not so fond of Single Action revolvers. That fact left me pondering a Ruger Redhawk or a 625 but either of those tend to go for more than my poor wallet can handle.
Still, someone else has different needs and as a result this Mountain Gun came up at the local pawn shop for a number of Ben's less than the auction sites would say and, well, that's all she wrote. That Blackhawk became my down payment, paid off the rest & took it home today.
It's a 625-9, CJJ3*** serial, $575 OTD. Shop owner said he'd ordered it new for the seller so I'm only the second owner which seems possible as it barely looks like it's been fired.
I hope to spend some quality time with my reloading press, some Unique & some 250 gr. LSWC this week & head to the range on Saturday.
All I need now is a set of Ahrends grips (Hmm... walnut or maple?) & a nice pancake holster.

Great looking Mountain Gun you got there! My Mountain Gun originally started out with a 5" Target barrel. I picked up a 4" MG barrel for it and had that installed. The lighter barrel sure makes it easier to pack around.
I use a couple of holsters for carrying my MG. The first is a pancake holster from Lobo Gun Leather:
The second one is a Bianchi Cyclone rig:

How well does that fiber optic sight work for you? I've been having thoughts of one of them up front with a Cylinder & Slide white dot fixed sight in back.

The best thing that happened to these poor old eyes. Fiber optics front and rear, Thanks Cylinder and Slide.

Only front sight I'll have on a dedicated "hunting handgun".
My hunting is mostly in timber/low light. The FO sight glows like a neon sign with any ambient light.

What a timely thread! Congrats on your find. I was out shooting my 625 MG .45 colt this very afternoon! I've just started carrying it as my farm sidearm. I recently got a Lobo improved pancake holster with two loop cartridge holders and really like the way it packs! My prefered ammo is Winchester 230 gr Silver tip HPs. I think you're gonna like the way it shoots!

Nice pistola and even nicer trade. Looked long and hard for a mountain gun in .45 ACP and had to settle for a full lug 625. Carried it to work some days and on the day that I interacted with one of Miami's many armed career criminals, he later asked me "watchew got, a canon"? Now the canon guards the house at night. Hope yours keeps you safe also.

Thanks folks. I spent some quality time with my press today and put together about 100 rounds of 9.2 gr of Unique (Lee 1.0 dipper) behind a 250 gr LSWC. I primed another 100 cases to load tomorrow I should have some fun this weekend when I can get to the range.

I know Mountain Guns are not rare but, finding one for sale is hard around here. It took me a while to run across this one and I bought it for a fair price a few years ago. Full-house .44mag ammo will get your attention pretty quickly.
Here is my .44mag 629-4 Mountain Gun.
Congrats on yours and have a great time at the range.

Too bad they didn't engrave or more deeply etch the name "Mountain Gun" on the barrel instead of whatever they did. They always looks so faded out on guns that are actually used. I'd tend to want to polish it off the rest of the way. C.B.

Great catch and price. That is one of the few guns I still want.
I said I would not buy anymore at my age but that one would break me over.

Really great M.G. you picked up. I have a 625-7 and it is a great gun to pack in the field and is very accurate! On my edition there were only 750 made and mine will always be shot as they were made to be. Mine has very consistant .4515 throats which i'm sure helps the accuracy. .45 Colt has always been my favorite big bore caliber. Enjoy!!

45 Colt Mountain Gun
Damn It guys. Now I think I'm going to have to have one of those. I have a very acurate 25-5 in 45 Colt. One of my favorite N- Frames. It has a 6" barrel but that MG would make a great carry gun. I think you guys just cost me money. I just can't shake this sickness. It's be comming a real problem.

I owned this one for about eight years. I wasn't shooting it much and I thought it to big for EDC. Sold it. It is a very nice gun.

The "sorry etching" has disappered from my 629 mtn gun and my 686 mtn gun. All from natural use and wear.
Can you imagine how ugly one those lazer engraved guns would be after using it for awhile.
As to lazer etching .......S&W could have just as well wrote the info on the gun with a SHARPIE.

Since I started the thread, I've picked up a couple of HKS speedloaders & had a friend make a custom holster for me. It's a wee bit big but when I wear my hoodie, it's fully covered.
Ordered some Ahrends for it as well. Retro banana in maple so they'll look like this sample image from his web:
Sweet sweet shooting revolver. Easily the nicest action I've owned, especially in double action.
