Not sure if this should be pre or post 80, but here goes. Model 624, 3", RB, in box. May have been fired, not sure. OEM and after market grips (stocks?) After market appear to be rose wood, I dunno.

When did the Lew Horton 624's come on the market and how were they different than regular production?

This is from memory and it aint good, but I think they were made in
1985 or 86 and about 5,000 made. Maybe some one else will come along that knows for sure.

The 3 inch Model 624's were made from 1985 until 1987. Approximately 5,000 of them were made. The initial batch was contracted for by Lew Horton's, a distributor who frequently had S&W handguns made up in then-unique configurations. Horton's sold the first of them but eventually they were also sold by other distributors.

These were made up in the same style as the earlier 3 inch Model 24-3's, which were blue steel guns, approximstely 5,000 of which were also manufactured for and sold by Lew Horton's. The 24-3's were both the first production round butt N frames and the first production N frames with 3 inch barrels.

The standard production Model 624's were made with 4 and 6-1/2 inch barrels and square butts. Nobody knows how many of those were made.

Also note that the 624s that shipped from 1/1/85 until 7/8/85 are subject to a recall for possible sub standard steel in the cylinder. Call S&W customer service with your S/N and they will tell you whether or not your gun is part of the recall. If it is they will give you instruction on how to go about sending it in to be tested.
