I found this S&W 460 2 3/4" at a local pawn/gun shop earlier this week, priced right. I have been looking for a short barrel gun to shoot 454 Casull and this one does that plus allows for 45 Colt reduced loads or 460 Magnum increased loads. I knew what to expect from this gun having shot Allen_frame's S&W 460 Performance Center short barrel gun. I have no interest in long range shooting with handguns, however, I don't mind having a little more power than my 3" S&W 629 .44 magnum can deliver.
I set up my target at 25 yards and sighted in the 460 using .45 Colt ammo. The accuracy was outstanding. My groups were about the same size as I shoot with my .45 Colt M25, M625 and Ruger Blackhawks.
I shot some 240 grain 454 Casulls and my groups got about 50% larger than my .45 Colt groups. It tooks several shots for me to become comfortable with the recoil from the 454s before my groups closed up to about the same size that I had shot with the .45 Colts.
I loaded up the gun with 200 grain 460 Magnums and prepared for what I knew would be a major recoil event. I was not disappointed. The recoil was brutal but manageable. My first shot was about 1" from the center of my target and the second shot was right next to the first shot. A range officer came over from the far side of the (outdoor) range to see "what the hell are you shooting." I will not be shooting any 460 magnum rounds at any indoor ranges.

I would certain think that max power, high velocity loads would have fierce muzzle blast and yeah, I doubt that you'd be very popular on an indoor range with such loads.

On, the other hand, you paid your money at the range...I always wear double ear protection but I haven't shot indoors in years. Don

Wow and I thought my 460V was a show stopper, that snubbie would be awesome.

As for shooting a 460 indoors I've done it at the local indoor range.

However, only the 45LC and 454Casull are allowed on the pistol side. They banish me to the rifle bay for full power 460 loads and with good reason.

The pistol backstop isn't rated for full house/fast moving 460/500 loads. Additionally, while I like the muzzle blast and noise can't see it being all fun for a shooter beside me.

If you ever find you need it for self-defense, close the distance between you and your assailant and jam the muzzle in his gut and trigger off a round. The tremendous volume of escaping gasses will do more damage than the bullet does, unless you hit the spine. I think you'd wind up with a large mass of nasty mess and blood all over the gun, your shooting arm and the front of your shirt and your face from the blowback.
