I would love to own a CS-1 in a 3 incher, but have yet to find any at a decent price, I have a 686-4 RB in 2.5 inch that I am thinking of ordering a 3 inch barrel for and the new barrels are pinned, so by doing that and then having the gun bead blasted wouldn't that be just as good if not better for shooting than an original CS-1?

Why not just keep the 2.5" and bead blast? .5" of barrel doesn't make that much of a difference, then tune up the action and you'd have a winner. I stumbled on to my CS1 and amazingly had the $ to grab it, S&W's in general aren't going to lose any value anytime in the future and the CS1's have a neat history. Hence the price.

The CS1's were contract guns for the US Customs Dept. in 1987/88, they were made in 3" and 4" round butt only versions. They also had a bead blast finish for a frosty look, lot's of folks feel these have slightly better actions than a commercial type gun. If you do a search for them you'll find lot's of really good info including production #'s, IMO they are the most collectible of the L frame 357's.

The CS 1 was made for the U.S. Customs Service. The 3" model was used by the plain clothes officers. Only a small number made it into civilian hands. It has a full-length ejector rod, round butt, dull bead blasted finish, an extremely slick action and tighter than normal tolerances. It is essentially a factory-made custom gun.

The reason I was thinking of attempting to build my own version of the CS-1 is that I like the fact that the new S&W 3 inch barrels are pinned, and the 2.5 inch one I have isn't pinned, plus I like the idea of the full length extractor that I would not have the benefit of with a 2.5 inch gun......this project still intrigues me and I'm seriously contemplating it. If anyone has done anything similar I would love to see the pictures!

I seem to have read somewhere that the internals were beefed up, for the Custom Service specs. Can't verify if that's true or not. I have one that started out as a 4" gun, and I sent it back to the factory to have a 3" barrel installed. I am partial to the 3' barrels, on the Smiths.

I would hold onto it. DO NOT SELL IT!!! You WILL kick yourself in the arse down the road if you do. Took me years to find one in a trade and it's a shooting machine. The actions are very smooth and make accurate DA shooting a breeze. That extra 1/2" also makes a huge difference in ejecting spent cases, especially with hot loads.

Owned a 2.5" 686 and it does not compare with this revolver IMO. The CS-1 is much more accurate in my hands.

I'm still waiting on my new TT Gunleather holster for it.

Do not sell your CS1. Sell a kidney or your least favorite child before you sell your CS1 or you will regret it. You have a second kidney and you can easily have another child. They are not making anymore CS1's.

I purchased 2 of them within weeks of each other. Don't know how it happened but I found them locally at nearby shows. I sold one to off- set the cost of keeping one for me. I later found a 3" 66-2 as well. Don't know which I like better but I definately like the 3" barrel better then a 2.5".

You did real good there Marshal tom!!! My 66-2 Ashland run is by far my all time favorite S&W followed by my ancient model 57 and in 3rd place my CS-1. I can shoot the 66 better with .38's but the 686 with it's extra weight wins out when shooting 158 gr. Speer Gold Dot .357's.
You now have 2 of the best revolvers to ever leave the factory IMO.

I was told by a senior S&W executive that most CS-1s went to the civilian market, but I doubt that that really makes much difference. In any case they are great guns. I do have a 3-inch version and like it a lot.

I carried a 4" CS1 as my duty revolver for many years and it is still one of my favorites, second only to my 3" Mod 66.

Ok, I am going to order a 3 inch barrel for my 686, and I was wondering as far as the extractor goes what do I need to order? I was thinking just the actual extractor rod that has the left hand threads or do I have to order the entire assembly?

I lucked up when i got mine.it dont have the dull finish it has the regular finish.I was told on here that it was one of the production overruns that was sold on the civilian market.but I got it and the box for $325 the gun store didnt know how to price it and sold it as a used 686.I couldnt get the money out fast enough.everyone who has held it loves it and wants one. I say good luck finding one.

A three inch CS-1 in original box that is 98% or better starts at 1000.00 in CA. Also on GB MANY of them bring more than that.

The thing with three inch CS-1's that no only they are rare, but they are also GREAT packing guns. Nice finish, adjustable sights, RB frame, three inch heavy barrel, very good actions, no lock or MIM parts.

CS-1's have two factors: Collectible and also a great gun. Got both.

PS. I own two of them in three inch LNIB. Always looking for another one.
