Default Tritium Available for other Revolvers Besides S&W Night Guard?

Weapons such as the S&W Night Guard Revolver feature a Tritium Front Night Sight.

Is this or other tritium sights available as aftermarket for other S&W revolvers, such as the Performance Center 627? E.g., I would love to have the Trijicons on my duty Glock on my revolver too.

I have tritium Night Sights on the front of my 60 Pro and Governer, as well as front & rear on my new 2" 632 Pro. You can see that they are 'there' - in total darkness. In any kind of light, the big orange ramp on my PC627 UDR is far more visible. A HiViz fiber optic front sight is easier to 'pick up' in low ambient light conditions, too. In fact, the rear fixed tritium sights on my newest - the 632 Pro shoots 3-4" low at 7yd because of the short rear sight height - and they don't have a taller one.

Not a tritium 'Night Sight' fan here!

My take is 180 degrees different.

If they make night sights for a defensive handgun or long gun, I have them on mine. I only wish they had come out earlier in my time in law enforcement. Anyone who watched night qualifications after officers began using them, has zero doubt of their value. They have become standard equipment for police work.

The Hiviz sight disappears in low light for me. I've replaced, or am replacing any that have come on my guns that might be used in dark places.

To the OP, yes, Tritium night sights can be installed on any S&W revolver. If the gun has a removable or pinned in front sight, it's a pretty easy install. If it doesn't, it's a job for a gunsmith.

XS Sights, Meprolight, and Trijicon all have models for S&W revolvers.

Elmer, who makes a tritium front sight for the Classic DX?

Does anyone have experience with the aftermarket Tritium sights?

Midway has adjustable night sights by Meprolight, but some of the user reviews indicated the front sight was too short.

I have the Meprolights on my two 4" 686 house guns, and they work great. I'm not sure what the reviewers mean by "too short". Do they mean that they didn't fill the slot where the red insert was? Mine fit perfectly in that respect.

The Meprolight insert fits the old red ramp models (front sight is integral with the barrel). It does not fit the pinned or DX sights. The red ramp is larger.

I wish Tritium was available in a small application bottle. Or a pen. Something where I could put a dab where I wanted.

I was planning to put night sights on my Mountain Gun. Maybe I should post in the "Smith-smithing" section and ask...

Sharpshooter,

I'm confused. I have a DX that has a red ramp(among the other interchangeable ones). One of the 686s I mentioned above on which I installed the Mepro has a pinned sight that was a red ramp before I installed the Mepro. The Mepro fit perfectly. The slots for the insert on both guns match that of the other 686, which has the integral sight ramp.

Another way to say this is that one of my 686s has an integral sight, and the other has a pinned sight. I bought two sets of Meprolights, and the front insert with both sets fit both sights. The slot in the DX sight, also a red ramp, looks identical.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you somehow. If you have a chance could you help clear up my confusion?

Thanks,
Andy

I discussed this with my regular gunsmith a couple of weeks ago. He said that to install the Meprolight insert on the new blade, it has to be put in with epoxy resin because the newer red ramp inserts are larger. I assume he knows because he has been putting them on.

Thanks for responding. He must be referring to guns newer than around 2002(mfg. date for my 686-6). As I stated, mine fit just right.

Not sure. You can call the different night sight companies. If no one make one, Tooltech is the company that Trijicon refers custom work to.

Elmer,

Tooltech is the only option I've found so far. Here is what they said last week: "Cost for a Trijicon insert in your front sight is $87.50. Return shipping for the sight is $12.00. Turn around time is about 2 weeks."

It sounds pricey to me. The XS sight is available for the DX at Midway: XS 24/7 Express Sight Set S&W Revolver Interchangable Front Sight Adjustable Rear Steel Blue Tritium Big Dot Front White Stripe Rear

I just don't like the round top of the front sight, and the weird rear sight. Since this would be to make use of the excellent interchangeable sight system, the rear sight would defeat that use. So, if I went with the XS, I would have a rear sight I wouldn't install and a front sight that I'm not sure would work for the factory rear sight.

Sigh...I guess if I want one, I'll send a plain front sight to Tooltech.

Tritium is a gas, not a liquid.

Night sights have small glass capsules that are filled with the gas. The larger the amount of gas in the vial the brighter the sight.

It has been so long since I bought these that I am not sure of the manufacturer of the front sight. I think it was SDM. The 627s use the same IFS as the older Classic DX revovlers.

As has already been mentioned ToolTech will make you anting that you want.

If you call XS, they'll sell you just the front sight. Order the standard dot instead of the big dot.

Trijicon does inserts for other companies and marks them.

Since it's used to boost the output of a nuclear weapon, I don't think you'd want a bottle of it.

XS makes a front dot front sight for the mountain gun. I've put it on the 2 that I've had and works great, especially with a C&S extreme duty fixed rear sight.

Default S&W DX tritium

Hi folks, new member. I've been corresponding with XS re their tritium products for S&W revolvers. They do not make any tritium rears, just the standard dot and big dot fronts. Although the DX fronts are not on their website, the tech assures me they exist. The Meprolight rears ARE available WITHOUT the glue-in insert, so you don't have to waste money buying a piece you won't use.
In order to get tritium on both ends for my 625JM, I'm going to purchase the Meprolight rear and the XS front, and install the rear on a spare sight body. I'm also going to find or turn a socket head screw for the front hole of the rear sight, because I use the revolver for both the revolver class at our local LE matches plus duty (night shift), off-duty and home defense. I have a Weigand rear blade and plain black Patridge on the gun now (match) and will shift both sights to tritium for carry. You can remove just the front screw and change out the rear body without losing zero - just slide the T-stud out and don't let it get turned while it's out of the gun.
For the poster who wanted paintable tritium, don't despair, they do make a phosphorescent paint (that must be what you were thinking about) - just be careful with it. You put some on your sights, protect it with a clear overcoat, and charge it with a light source. It works as well as the dots on the pre-tritium GI lensatic compass. In fact, since the tritium is dead in both my compasses, I wish they WERE the chargeable ones instead of tritium!
