Default Warranty problem?

I have a 624 that has oversize throats, measuring .4335 and it doesn't shoot cast bullets well at all. Even jacketed bullets group just so-so.

So I filled out the warranty form on S&Ws web site and this morning I got back an email saying that my serial number does not show up in their system.

After checking it out and determining that the serial number is correct, I took a close up photo of the number on the butt of the gun and attached it as a JPEG file to an email asking what do I do now?

I am just wondering if any of you have had this happen?

They are usually ver helpful. You might try calling them and explaining what's happened, and asking for assistance.

Oh, I haven't given up on them by any means. I am sure that is just a mix-up of some kind that will be corrected. I figure that if the picture I sent them doesn't do it, I will call them and discuss it with a human.

I would not be surprised that they might not want to replace the cylinder over a couple of 1/1000s of an inch, but I thought it was worth a try.

By the time you get to .4335" it is hard to find bullets that will size that large and clean up all around.

Any thoughts on that aspect of the case?

Just a note on the serial number look-up. I have mentioned this before, but here is another good place to do it.

I called to have them run-the-numbers on mine (6 of them). Some I had purchased new within the past 6-months to a year, some were used, etc. They COULD NOT find a single SN in the system on any of my weapons. I asked the rep. what they would do if I had a warranty issue and she told me that unless they could prove otherwise, they would take my word that I was the original owner and warrant the weapon. She further told me all the warranty card was used for was marketing information and their system was by no means accurate.

I am pretty sure that if you have one built after the lifetime warranty to 'the original owner" was introduced, unless they can find out otherwise...they have no choice but to take the gun back and fix it under warranty.

Hmmmm.... About a week ago you had an unrelated complaint about S&W customer service involving a 686 recall issue, snubbiefan. Those who posted on that thread, including me, found S&W service dependable and responsive... completely contrary to your posted experience..

Seems you have several individual problems, including this one, that are unique to you. Leads one to believe it may involve your approach, demeanor or intent with your confrontational relationship with them that provokes customer service to answer you the way they do.

Reading between your lines one could conclude you may be attempting to receive expensive "shipping paid" warranty service you aren't entitled to and that offends you.

I don't speak for others on this board, but after 35 plus years of dealings with S&W customer service your issues don't hold any validity to me....

I will simply say.....if you have time to roam around through the forum trying to build cases against folks by tying post together....you really need to go get a life. I am not the one with the problem....you are. You need to read between your own lines and leave everybody else's alone.

Well I got my answer today. This is what they said:

Well....I think they are being generous in sending you the prepaid label and I am sure they will give you an estimate for the repairs, which you will be responsible for since it is pre-89. The part about the serial number is a bit curious. I would think a SN would never be "invalid". But....I got into all sorts of trouble talking about serial numbers before, so I won't mention anything much past that, but I will say there could be a twist here that you could possibly press Smith on. I do believe there was a recall on the 624 concerning the cylinder. I think it was possibly on certain serial numbers and that gets us back to the part about the problem with the SN data base. If their database was accurate....I think your serial number should be there and it may even qualify for a recall. I know this may not help the particular problem you have, but you may have some "leverage".

Maybe send it in, get their estimate and then weigh that against what the gun is worth, but I would consider trying to find out about any possible recall they had issued on the gun at one time. Good luck!

PS: There is a thread here on the forum concerning that recall titled "Model 624 Recall and "F" Stamp". I do not think you will like what all you read, but I would go there and see anyway.
