Default 617 trigger, how light?

What's the lightest you've been able to tune your 617 10 shot? What did you have to do to get it that light and 100 percent reliable?

Mine is at 8 lbs but is smooth as glass. If I crank the strain screw down 1/4 turn it won't shoot. I've tright a lighter, bobbed hammer with no luck. I've used a lighter rebound spring but it will not make the trigger go forward.

Anyone have luck with a light action?

I assume 8# is double action pull and that seems heavy for a revolver. What is the single action pull?

3.5 and very quick. No slack or take up. I only shoot single action when I'm testing ammo.

you can only go so low until misfires become an issue- set it at the weight you can get reliable ignition out of it then leave it alone and accept it where it is- I haven't ever fired a k frame that didn't have a great SA trigger anyway.

I would be happy with a glass smooth 8lb pull on my Model 18-4. Using a digital fish scale I'm running over 9lbs reliably after smoothing the innards and changing springs. I was considering a lighter bobbed hammer, but your post indicates it won't help that much.

Have you tried an extended C&S firing pin? I know this is done by some. It may allow you to go a little lighter.

It will definitely cause a problem dryfiring, especially without spent casings, not that you could before, but likely a much bigger concern now.

I've only used the Wolf Springs and am happy, for now, where mine's at.

They make extended firing pins for rimfires?

I have one. Go to APEX TACTICAL to order the firing pin and spring from them. Only for the 617

He also makes a replacement hammer that will help get the trigger under 6 lbs but I don't want to spend the $140. I may just try to bob my hammer and see what to do. I can also put a stuck hammer back in if that doesn't help.

I went and looked. I see the replacement hammer for the 617. I did not see a 617 specific firing pin? Are the rimfire firing pins the same as centerfires? My only other S&W is a M66-3 which has a hammer mounted firing pin.

The one from Cylinder and Slide seems to work better in the 617

Probably the top shooter who uses the 617 for Steel Challenge is Jerry Miculek. If you don't know who he is, google the name on youtube and prepare to be amazed.

That said, he knows what makes a proper trigger, so if you really feel that you need to modify from stock (I like my 617 just the way it is), then it would be a good and cheap investment to get Jerry's own DVD on how to mod your trigger.

Here's just one place to get it:

Trigger Job: Complete Action Tuning Smith Wesson Revolvers Jerry Miculek DVD

Added: Here's Miculek in action. You might want this guy to tell you how to do a trigger mod on your revolver.

I have Jerry's video and have used it extensively for all my revolvers including the 617. It's a great video and I couldn't have gotten the trigger as smooth as it it without watching it.

I know I can make it lighter if I change hammers to the one Jerry is using. He's using an older model from Apex. They now have a "new and improved" hammer for $ 140 that you then have to add you old pins and sturrup to.

I may just have to go that way. Randy says you can get the trigger pull down to about 5 lbs.

You say you crank the strain screw down 1/4 turn and it won't shoot. Did you mean LOOSEN the strain screw? Turning it down should make the pull heavier and cure any misfire problems.

My old six shot 617 had an action job done by Behlert a long time ago and it's very smooth and light using the stock parts. Sometimes I think it should be too light to be reliable, but I don't recall ever having problems with it.

You know what I meant, cranked it down in poundage.

I shot up a bunch of Federal Champions and Federal Auto Match today and the gun worked fine and grouped real well so I'll just leave it alone.

You don't need a light trigger as long as it's smooth and mine is smooth as glass.
