model 625 rare, 1 of 48???????
Saw this posted in midwest gun trader in missouri, smith and wesson model 625, 45 colt, 5" barrel, stainless frame with blued cylinder, serial #cls0000 to cls0047, he says this gun is ultra rare and listed on page 254 in the standard catalogue of smith and wesson, his is number 20, wants 1000.00 or trade, are these guns really that rare?

Yep, it's there. Upper left hand corner of page 254. Might be a little high. I had a 3" model 65 that was #6 of 23 that I never could sell for over what a normal 65 would sell for. My brother has an odd 7" 686. They made less than 40 that way and again it doesn't seem to have any higher demand than any other barrel length. Of course that could change someday.

Revolver variants with low production totals are pretty common. At one time S&W turned them out by the dozens, as with the Horton and Talo "exclusives". Generally they don't command a higher price and, depending on demand, may actually sell for less than their counterparts from the larger production populations. As the 625 isn't considered collectible by most, you can't expect a collectible price, regardless of production.

i wish that were true when it comes to pre-lock 3" 625s. They're not ultra rare collectibles, but sure are priced that way

True, but they came out right after that with 1,500 more for a stocking distributor special, so they are not rare, only if you want one in that particular serial number range. The 45 Colt 5" is not rare in my estimation.
