My First Revolver! With pictures
Hi Everyone,
Just purchased my first Smith & Wesson Revolver. Its a Model 586 Nickel, I purchased from a co-worker for $350 no box or papers just the gun. What do you guys think? good deal? right price? or Rape price?
Also need some input when this been made?
ABT5xxx no "M" Stamp
and There is also A6 and 4296x stamp where it holds the cylinder. What does the A6 and 4296x means?
Thanks in advance!
Here are the pictures.

I'd buy that 586 for $350. Nice first revolver. My first revolver was a 686, and it could easily be the last I part with. Even though I mostly shoot and carry my 66 or my 60, it's just a good do-it-all workhorse of a firearm. I'm sure you'll enjoy that one so much, you may catch the addiction as I did. Welcome & enjoy!

Welcome to the forum. Great price on a great revolver, looks like it was probably manufactured sometime in early 1983. The numbers you mentioned other than the serial number are just assembly numbers, and have no significance now. If do a search here on the forum you will find more than one thread regarding the "M" stamp and the modification.

Welcome,
That was a great first revolver and a good price as well. Some of us like the nickels some don't. I bet it shoots as good as it looks!

Around these parts that's a nice price for a 586. Good score!

welcome to the forum! you did fine at that price, and it will be a super first revolver, but i have some really bad news for you! the whole revolver thing is an affliction! it will end up costing you many thousands of dollars, and there is evidently no cure!

The 4269x is the "assembly number". You will find in on the yoke, bottom left of the frame under the stocks, and on the inside of the sideplate. It serves to identify all the parts of the major assembly so they can be matched if separated. These parts are all hand fit to each other. The A6 is an inspectors or fitters stamp.
Rape price? It all depends on who did what to whom! YOU sure didn't get hurt.
I would far prefer the Nickel 586 to a 686, nice revolver. This gun would be subject to the modification recall since it is pre-1987 when the -1M and -2 began.

Congratulations on a fine starter piece !
Condolences on becoming another addict like us !
Just don't clean that piece w/Hoppe's #9 - it will damage the nickel.

Congrats you did real good, I would give you 450.00 for it in a second or another 450.00 gun for it if for some reason you decide you do not like it, lol.

Great deal, great gun. I don't have many nickle plated guns around but don't see a problem with cleaning the insides with the likes of Hoppes #9 & the outside with a wipedown with a lightly oiled cloth.
With an older S&W I like to remove the sideplate to make sure it's clean & lightly lube the inside. It's not hard, with instructions on u-tube, but I'd suggest AGAINST unless you are comfortable doing it. It's to nice of a revolver to be messing it up.

You didn`t get hurt any at that price. Last week I saw a blue 586 that they were asking over $500 for at a local shop. It was gone when I stopped there saturday to get a can of gun oil.
Don`t know what the final price was, but would guess not much less than the asking price considering it was gone in less than a week.
It did have the original grips, but that`s about the only advantage it had over your gun.

I paid $500 for a nice, but used 686 a couple of weeks ago at a gunshow. Mine has the "M" modification, you ought to read up on that as it affects reliability.
