I found a S&W 547 that my friend has for sale. It is in 98% condition but does not have the box. He wants $800 for it, but I'm not sure of that's too much. What are your thoughts?

That is in the range for this gun. The 4" are less common than the 3", and pinned barrels are fewer than unpinned. Whether you think it is worth $800 is the question. Hope this is helpful.

Those are in-demand revolvers and the price is creeping up. If I could find one here in California in that condition for that price, I'd probably take it (even an unpinned four-incher).

Although there were fewer of the 4" guns made , there
seems to be a premium on the 3'' guns just because.

$ 700. would be a more realistic price. Especially in todays economy.

Is this cat your friend? Then $100. or so should not make a big difference
,unless he is really hurting for cash.

I personally wouldn't want a 4" model 547. Just because.

I suggest you buy it. The s&w 547 is not made anymore, an you have an opportunity to buy one so please for goodness sake buy it.

I have a model 547 with 3inch barrel and round handle . I am going to sell . What is a pinned barrel ? I am not sure if this pistol has one. I can post a picture if needed?

Allen you nailed it, I mean exactly what I was going to say. Even though fewer 4 inchers were made, less 3 inchers come for sale and they are worth more.

Pythons are out of the buying range for most of us now. So are most Colts.
I have to admit I like Smiths better.
So time will tell as to what is more desireable and which actually sells easier.
I am very tempted to sell my 3 inch 547 LNIB with just a slight turn line.
I am hesitant to shoot it since I may just like it too much to part with. Again time will tell and the Python safe queen too.
Always a difficult choice to make.

The M 547 is a great gun to own from a shooters viewpoint and as a shooter I would value the gun at $350-$400 as it is an unpinned K frame 3" or 4" revolver. However, because there were only about 10K made and they have a very unique ejector system, and don't require a moon clip the 547 starts to separate itself from other 9mm revolvers. I don't believe it is the 10K revolvers that make this a collectable revolver but the unique way the gun is designed. As long as S&W doesn't start production of another K frame with the same type of ejector system the prices on these should stay stable or even go up some. Although in the long term I think these may actually lose some value. If another 547 style revolvers is produced by S&W I think it will degrade the collector value.
With all that hot air I would pay $450-$700 for a shooter grade example 90-95% and no more than $1200 for a NIB example.
I bought a shooter grader 95% 3" RB for between $500 and $700 this summer. (No Box)

Unfortunately that is the going price for 547s. However, they are a unique and an excellent revolver. All of my 547s have shot more accurately than any other revolver I have owned.

#1 on most accurate revolver... Even my wife likes it!

I've got a 4" 547 that is a pleasure to shoot. Looks and feels like a Model 10 and is extremely accurate. No moon clips to mess with at the range either. If you are a reloader, both guns cost about the same to shoot, but if you do not reload, the 9mm is usually much more affordable.

Charter Arms just introduced their version of this gun - the Pitbull. If it is a well made gun, it will probably pull down prices of the 547 some because shooters (as opposed to collectors) now have a more affordable option.

I have been trying to sell a 3" 547 over in the for sale section of this forum for a week with little luck. I was basing my price on "sold" GB prices, with a few hundred off, so maybe a S&W collector could get it, and the less of a hassle aspect of this forum rather than GB.

I'm thinking about putting the gun on GB this weekend, but I'm wondering if I'm being unreasonable about the price?

I have not shot it yet, maybe I'll shoot the heck out of it and I won't feel so bad.

It seems the average selling price for a 4" square butt has jumped to in the $1200 area with the 3" round butt bringing $2-300 more...and those are selling prices on the gun auctions not the asking prices...

Funny but when they came out they were kinda like the Model 58...couldn't give them away...now they command more money than any fixed sight gun....
