Default Is a Mod 48/w 22lr cylinder as accurate as a mod 17 shooting 22lr

I have a Model 48 with the 22 lr cylinder, it seems to be just slightly less accurate than my Mk II Ruger. I seem to recall that the barrel dimensions are different with the 22 WMR gun.
Would you expect a model 17 to shoot 22lr ammo more accurately that a model 48? Also, I shoot this gun almost exclusively with 22lr ammo does this raise any issues in a gun designed for the slightly larger round?

Actually this is a pinned/recessed gun but this section of the forum seems to be more shooter and less collector thus my choice of placement.

Thanks

fcr

It's my understanding that the bore diameter of a .22lr is .223 while the bore diameter of a .22 mag is .224. That is why a dedicated .22lr firearm will shoot better than a .22lr through a .22 mag firearm. If I am incorrect I'm sure someone will be along with the facts!

Stands to reason. Many will tell you the old ruger single sixs that were made before they went to convertable single sixs were more accurate before they went to the .224 bore to accomidate both with one size fits all.

Back in 1976, I bought a 5-1/2" Ruger Single Six Convertible. It was very inaccurate with 22LR ammo, the type I intended to use the most, so I sold it. I had an opportunity to buy a nice Model 48 a few months ago but thought back to that Single Six and passed.

a model 48 with the lr cyl. is a neat set-up. due to the larger bore diameter of the model 48, most of them won't shoot as well as a model 17. there are exceptions to everything however.

I have a MKII and Mod 18. The Mod 18 is not as accurate as the MK II. And the MK II is not as accurate as my Mod 41.

is your Mod 17 inaccurate or are you comparing apples and oranges?

did you ever try slugging the barrel? Does the .22LR not touch the lands? 22LR is perfect soft lead, I think it would expand to fit the barrel even if it was 0.001 smaller in diameter.

Mine seems to shoot just fine with both cylinders. I usually only shoot CCI Blazers in it for 22Lr . In fairness though my 17-2 shoots abit better but, not by much.

Thanks for the feedback. To answer the question, no, I have not tried slugging the barrel, I may have given the impression the Mod 48 was inaccurate. That is not the case, it will make a silver dollar size group where the MK II will make a 50 cent piece size group, noticeable but nothing that overly detracts from the enjoyment of shooting it.

Thanks fcr
