Distinguished combat magnum?
I have seen people call their 686s a "Distinguished combat magnum". Is this a special issue or all 686s called this?

The Distinguished Combat Magnum M586, M686) was named by S&W just like the Combat Masterpiece (M15), Combat Magnum (M19 & M66) for the other models.

That is the official name of the 586 and 686.
The K-Frame 19 and 66 are the original Combat Magnums. When the L-Frames came out in the early '80s the "Distinguished" moniker was added by the factory for these models.
