Value of Model 60 Chiefs Special (38cal)
I am hoping you can help me put a value range on my model 60 that I purchased new, I believe it is model year 1981.
SN/R326XXX 1981?
I have probably put 500 -60 hundred rounds through it, I have the box, paperwork and cleaning rod that came with it
It is in good shape but I know that is a matter of opinion, I can send pics if needed.
Thank you for your help.

I would think that if check other forums or online sales you can probably find the price is $400+ subject to condition of course.

I'd have to say 400+ with the box and papers, condition is everything...

i agree. if it is in nice shape, original and complete, it will bring 400.00 easily around here.

If anyone has a way of confirming SN R326XXX is from 1981 I would be grateful. I think I bought it is 81 or 82.

R300801----R329000 (1982) So maybe yours R326XXX is 1982.

Cucamonga,
Your revolver, like anything else, is worth what someone else is willing to pay you for it in a arms-length transaction.
For a firearm, the best way to estimate this is to join Gunbroker.com and do an advanced search on completed auctions. Only look at auctions where there was an actual winner. Reserve auctions with no winner or auctions with no bids are useless.
To get the most accurate estimate, you will want to compare to auctions which are similar to your's in the following way:
Revision number (no dash, -1, -2, -3 etc.)
Condition
Assessories (original grips, original box, original tools)
Barrel length
Pin vs. Non-pinned barrel
Asking for a price check on a forum like this generally isn't the best way to gauge value. While there are many experts on S&W revolvers here, they are usually experts because they own a number of S&W revolvers and in some cases who multiple copies of certain ones.
Someone who already owns three Model 60's is usually going to place a lower value on one as opposed to someone who is looking to purchase one and has cash in hand ready to buy.

Thanks to all for your responces.
Broadside,
I expected a large range of estimated values but not knowing where to go felt this was a good place to start and it has proven to be and I now know I can go to gunbroker.com and search sales histories and get actual sales prices.
Tell me about dash numbers, is this a dash in the serial number?
Thanks again.

Open the cylinder and look at the front of the frame below the barrel. It should read 60, 60-1, 60-2, etc. Here's an example where to look

Around the Tampa area I've seen shot loose 60s with an asking price of $525. I offered $400 and had it snatched out of my hand.
If it is LNIB I'd pay $500. That is the max I'd go but prices around here haven't been realistic since November 2008.
