Default Model 624 6.25" barrel value?

OK so I know this is my first post so please let me appologize for the first thread being a "for sale" but I am no troll!!

I went to our local gun shop this evening to look into trading my Model 624 revolver and was insulted by what they offered. The gun has had less than 500 rounds through it and I have owned it since it was new (I bought it at 15 with money I had saved). I only ever shot target with it. It is totally original and has not been modified at all from stock. There are a few scuffs on the grips and several very small rust pin spots of rust on the top of it but it is in great mechanical condition.

I was wondering what the reasonable market value of this gun should be and am open to offers. It is just a little too expensive to shoot anymore and I may be interested in some sort of semi auto .40 or .45 semi auto trade as I do not NEED the money but would rather have a different gun.

Feel free to email me if you are interested for pics.

Not answering your question, but you should hold on to that gun. Clean it up and set it aside. Buy whatever .40 you want and go on. Someday, if you sell it, you will wish you had it back.

Thanks for the advice. I am a bit torn and like I said I don't need the money. I guess my bigger question is what is it really worth. I was just let down with the offer that my gun shop gave me considering I wanted to use it as store credit so they would keep the money on their side of the counter no matter what. They came highly recommended by my friends but the number they shot at me seemed insultingly low. Maybe I just don't see the big picture and think I have something special when it is not so great. I live in the real world and am willing to accept it if that is the case but I doubt it is worth the small amount they offered. Advice is certainly much appreciated on this!

If you have the box and all that came inside, you should be about to get $600 or more out of it in a private sale. Not near that much from a gun store.

The worst way to sell it is to take it to a gun store and ask what they will pay for it. You will always be disappointed.

If you want retail for it, you will have to sell it yourself. Put an ad in the paper, take it to a gun show (but, again, don't ask a dealer to buy it), etc. It will take time, but if you are patient, you will get a reasonable price for it.

Lastly; don't sell it!

The Model 624 is a highly regarded revolver. To get top dollar, though, you would want to have the original box, stocks, and all the paper and tools that came with the gun. Plus, it needs to be clean and in good mechanical condition with no signs of misuse or abuse.

If you still have the box, check the end label for a red ink stamp of the letter "C" inside a circle. This stamp indicates the gun has been tested by the factory for substandard steel used in cylinders of some of the early 624 guns that were subject to a recall. If you have it, you are in a better position than if you don't. In my opinion, your gun is worth $600-$800 depending on the above mentioned variables.

Thanks guys I feel much better. The gun shop offered me $185 so I guess I was right to be upset. I have owned the gun since new and I never knew anything about a recall so I am going to have to look into that. Since I bought it when I was 15 years old and did things as a 15 year old would I do not have the box or papers . It is nice to know this gun is as desireable as I thought it would be so yes I think I will hold on to it for a while longer.

Welcome to the Forum. Since you've made the (wise) decision to keep your 624, you can call S & W customer service with your serial number and see if the cylinder was subject to the recall. The downside is that if is does fall under the recall, they have no replacements.

Second, regarding your local shop, they obviously gave you a low trade-in value, so good for you to recognize that (you probably paid over twice that for the gun back in the 1980s, and guns don't generally depreciate). If they seem to price their trade-in guns fairly, perhaps they made you an offer that was in line with their markup, and you can use that to your advantage with a future purchase. If they price their used guns high, I wouldn't hold it against them - they are in business to turn a profit, after all - but I wouldn't ever shop there or recommend them to anyone I know. Hope this is helpful.

Well he said they would "give me" $185 for it and probably price it in the case at $250...sounds like they were either feeding me a line or did not do their correct homework on the gun. Either way I think I will watch future transactions very closely with them.

I could be wrong, but I think the recall was only for the 624 with a 3 inch bbl.

I hope so! My serial number falls in the range of possibility so I called customer service and am waiting to hear back from them (fingers crossed!)

Wow! Pennsylvania is a long way from Oklahoma, but I might just have to take a trip there if they're willing to sell a 624 for $250. I wonder what else they have!

Oh wait.... they were just feeding you a line.

I'm glad you came here before you made a trade on your gun. If you are like a lot of us, the first S&W we own becomes more valuable to us as time goes by. I don't have my first one, but I wish I did. If it was a 44 Special I would probably still be trying to find it and buy it back.

Stainless revolvers can be spruced up and made to look better with a little care. You'll find plenty of sound advice here on how to go about that should you decide you want to.

As for the gunshop you talked to, it sounds to me like they were shooting you a line. Any decent shop knows what that revolver was worth and that with a little work it could be cleaned up. I'd stay away from them when it comes to selling or trading guns. If I bought from them I would be well informed on the value of what I was looking for prior to checking with them.

Yup you are wrong. There are threads on this forum about the recall. The recall covers any 624 within a certain serial range.

Yep...I just heard back from them and mine has to go back for the recall. I hope I get it back. The anticipation is going to kill me!

BTW - It has the 6.25" length so at least some of the recall covered that as well.

Whew!....just got 'er back from S&W. AOK and good-to-go.

One more thank you to those who educated me about the gun and particularly the recall...I never would have known otherwise.

There was no need to be insulted or upset by the gun shop's low-ball offer. That's how they stay in business. If you don't like their offer, just move on. Nothing personal to it.

You were wise to find out what it was worth before taking any action, and even wiser to keep it.

Well perhaps you are correct BUT them telling me they would put it in their case at $250 I feel was in fact a line. I understand the need to make profit margin as I have had my own business for 13 years but the true margin they were looking at seems unreasonable considering they operate out of the owners outbuilding so overhead is relatively low.

Not looking to start anything here just stating my position. Glad I kept it too!!!!!

Oh, I agree with you, their "offer" was completely unreasonable! I'm sure they would have priced it at $550 or more. My only point is that it is best not to take an absurdly low offer as an insult. Gun shops (at least around here) routinely do this to widows who bring in their late husbands' gun collection for disposal.

Just as a bit of an education, here is how dealers commonly handle commodities such as handguns when talking trade. Normal rule of thumb is that they will only offer about 40% of the retail market value. I learned this lesson many years ago when I was a bug eyed camera nut. Until digital took over cameras had a commodity market very similar to handguns. That is that any dealer is taking a real gamble on how quickly they will be able to "turn over" an item in their used showcase. If an item sits too long they'll lose all the potential for profit in the cost of heat, lights, and salaries for the shop personel. It also means they have real money tied up on an item that may end up being a dust collector. Yeah, the trade in valuations are insulting, but it is how these markets work. It's also why I still own cameras & lenses purchased back in the 70's.

Good news for you is that bullets haven't gone digital yet. So, if you don't like an offer, just keep that gun, you can still buy ammo to shoot in it. In addition, if you had sold it you would probably regret that decision at some point in your life. While it may currently be a "safe queen" it's also the first handgun you ever bought.

copcarguyp71,

You were smart to hesitate. I used to get "umbraged" (I just invented a word!!) at what gunshops would pay but they have to make a profit and that's where they make it is on used guns and not new. Same with cars.

That gunshop though, was hosing you. A reputable shop might have offered at least $300.00 or better I'd think.

A .44 Special S&W revolver, the older the better, in my unimportant opinion, will probably always hold a higher value then many other "common" S&W's even after Laser Guns become the next hottest gun-thing.

There is a certain history and "panache" to owning a S&W .44 Special, especially the older ones (did I say that already??)

The M624 below is mine, I polished it. It will be one of the last to go. I shoot 240 cast SWC's at 1,000 fps with Herco. Low recoil and 2 1/2 inch groups at 25 yards.

Just got on a waiting list for a new M&P Sport 15 too!
