6.5 Inch.. 500 Mag Cant Stand it no Longer
Talked with my LGS today. I feel he gave me a decent price on one. Ordered it should be in my loving hands next week sometime. Anyone here have 1? Likes - Dislikes? I do like it having the ports instead of the comp. I worry might have probs with the comp down the road. Anyway I am excited & anxious to get the beast.

I see you bit the bullet, so to speak. I hope you started reloading as well since the ammo isn't cheap. If you haven't and you love the gun you will, it's addicting.
I don't have the ported model but I do have 5 different 500's and love all of them. They each have a purpose, and that's to make me happy
I'm not sure why you think the comp would be a problem since I've never had any problems with any of mine.

For a new 500 shooter, I highly recommend the widest choice of 500 hard cast bullets in the country.

The .500 is the final word in large caliber revolvers...post some pics when you bring it home.

Sounds like you have the half lug. They're all fine guns, some fit one's preferences better than others. Enjoy and reload if you don't already. BTW, there are some unique things about the .500 reloading wise that you should be aware of.
Use "R" (rifle primer) cases
Ensure primers are fully seated (particularly important with heavy loads)
Seating and crimping in two separate steps makes for better loads
I find Hornady One Shot case lube and carbide dies makes life much better
Have fun. Don

6.5" 500 Mag
I have a 6.5" barreled 500 Mag that came from the Performance Center. It has a full tapered lug, and full tapered rib, and a compensator that screws on to the end of the barrel, adding another 1".
I put a thin penetrating oil in the action (Kroil), and over the course of a couple of weeks dry-fired it into dummy rounds 2000 times. I opened it up, sprayed it clean with Gun Scrubber, than applied Militec-1 metal treatment. I closed the side plate back up, and pulled the trigger - WOW! What a difference a little wear can do. Everything is still tight; that action will never be a target action. The hammer spring has to be strong to hit the large rifle primers hard enough to insure detonation.
But it is much, much better, smoother, than when I received it (it was N.I.B.), and my trigger fingers on both hands are a helluva a lot stronger than they were.

While I do not own one, I regularly shoot a friends. After a while the recoil becomes very manageable, and the gun is quite accurate. I just won't fire it at an indoor Range anymore as it is much louder than I can deal with, even with ear plugs AND a head set! Outdoors it's a lot of fun. Enjoy it!

I think I have the same gun you are buying. It took me 50-60 rounds to get used to the recoil, but now my 686 and my model 19 feel like air guns......they go "pop" and I dont feel anything with full power .357 rounds. I love the gun, recoil is hard but bearable, you will need hearing protection. Thats the one negative, it is LOUD!
Cheaper than dirt sells 350gr hollow points pretty cheap....about what reloading would be, well with shipping its a tad over but until you commit to reloading they are your best source.

I own three of the 500 mags, but not the 6.5" I own the 8 3/8", 4", and the 10.5" Performance Center.
The longer barreled 500mags are fun to shoot. I'd like to try the 6.5" sometime and see how that feels, because the 4" 500mag is just brutal to shoot. I've got several large caliber guns besides the 500mags (Desert Eagle 44mag and 50AE, three Taurus Raging Bulls), and I enjoy shooting all of them and hunt with a few of them. But that 4" 500mag just kicks my .....

I bought one of the earliest 8 3/8" 500s when they first came out in '03, with the integral comp, and then a 4" when those came on the scene in '05, with the larger removable comp. I've shot both fairly extensively. With identical loads (my standard is a handloaded 440 grain SWC bullet which is virtually identical to the infamous CorBon 440) I find that the 4" actually has a milder or more diffused recoil impulse than the 8 3/8". It hurts my hand less than the longer barreled gun. I attribute that to the design of the respective comps.
Having said that, I find the longer gun more pleasant and accurate to shoot. The 4" gives off so much blast, noise and flash that it "seems" much worse. One day I was shooting it just about the time it was getting dark, and I saw spots for hours afterward.
