Default 617 in LGS

Came across a 617-1 in a local gun shop today. I guess I have to wait untill christmas for the smith and wesson book. My question is the price was 849.00 for a 617-1 ,8 3/8 bbl sn ccu005x. Gun looks good but needs a cleaning.

Sounds to me like that gun shop has fallen in love with that 617. That price is at LEAST 250 dollars too high, especially considering it has the 8 3/8 inch barrel. While that long barrel may be rare, the reason for that is that it's also not highly desired by a great majority of shooters.

If you want it that's fine, just keep in mind that it's the heaviest K frame in existance and distinctly muzzle heavy. I also wouldn't offer more than 500 dollars for it because if you ever decide to trade it off you'll take a beating.

i have to disagree with scooter,if it has box etc and no problems,850 is the going price for that 617.I have two like new in box and would'nt take anything under 800 for either of them.Look at completed auctions on GB,they are going for big bucks. The no lock 648,617 4 in.and 617 8 3/8,are top dollar right now.Alot depends on condition and box etc of course.

I think the guys that want the 617 8 3/8 ,already have the 4 and 6 in barrel no locks and want to fill the collection. They are cool guns and like they say,not making them anymore.I agree with 410,not a steal, especially if just the gun, about 150 to high w/out all the xtras.I have the 4,6 and 8 3/8 ,no locks, box etc.,love em all.

I am the proud owner of a 617 no dash with the 8 3/8ths barrel and find it to be the easiest .22 handgun I own to shoot without bench-resting. Weight equals steady.

Try and get the gun for $700 to $750, though they may stick to their price touting the fact that S&W hasn't made an 8 3/8ths inch .22 since the '90's. Wouldn't sell mine with box, docs and kit for anything. As a matter of fact, my wife shoots my 17-4, 8 3/8ths barrel better than any other handgun! Next is a 6 inch 17-8 10 shot with the full underlug, so those heavy barrels must be good for something

I paid $900 for a no dash P&R 8 3/8 inch barrel and I was thrilled to get it to complete my set of no dash P&R 629's.

I only see them for sale online, never seen one at any of my ****** LGS's... Sure, it seems high, but someone will buy it. If I saw it, I would try......
