Default Need Help 340PD Ammo Question

I just picked up a 340PD with te Hi Viz sight. I will pocket carry it everywhere and i highly doubt i will ever fire a .357 magnum round thru it.
My question is about the 120gr bullet warning. Doesn't this apply only to magnum rounds??
I like(primarily because they are easy to shoot) the Federal personal defense .38 110's, .38 110 Silvertips, or the .38 Corbon 110 +P.
I want to shoot them in the 340PD but i also will follow the recommendation if it applies to .38.

Anyone know the answer?

Thanks

I would make a good guess that they are talking about 110 gr. 357 Magnum ammo.

From what I read the 340's and others that are made along the Night Guard line will hold up to about 1500 rounds of Full House ammo before needing a trip back to S&W for the Top Strap Shield to be replaced. Shooting 38's in it should not hurt the shield at all.

I have came up with a good lite load for my 310 Night Guard, as I plan to shoot it a great deal.

In my view, the .38 Special +P FBI load (158 gr H.P.) is THE carry load for the alloy framed .38 Specials and .357 Magnums. It has a good record of stopping power and is not so powerful as to cause handling issues when shooting.

That's my choice for my daily carry (a 642 S&W).

Wasn't there something here a few weeks ago about light loads causing the titanium cylinder to erode. Pretty good pics IIRC.

A lot of folks like the Speer Gold Dot 135gr. Short Barrel +P in 38 Sp.

I know it's not exactly what you're looking for but they shoot well in my 642 and shoot to point of aim. Very controllable, too.

I would load it up with CorBon DPX in .38 Special.

Better heed the warning.

Just do what it says. There are plenty of excellent .38 Special SD cartridges out there, if you don't want to use .357s. Federal Hydra-shoks are always good, and there are many more that are heavier than 120-grains. Why take any chances with that rather expensive revolver? Listen to the experts - the guys who made it.

Try out whatever ammo you decide to use. If you go lighter than the recommended bullet weight, make sure the gun doesn't sieze-up from uncrimping bullets.

In .38, I prefer the Speer Short Barrel version 135 gr. GDHP (860 fps in 2" barrel). The .357 Short barrel version of this round is still under 1,000 fps. (990) out of a 2" barrel, so recoil shouldn't be too fierce.

Personal experience + S&W comments:
Any .38 load is ok except possibly +P+.
Magnum loads with light (110 gr) bullets will quickly erode the front on the titanium cylinder. I messed up mine with less than 50 rds.

That's my favorite load. I just found some 110 gr Silver Tips. Ill keep them in reserve in case I can't find the Speer 135+Ps.

Like Dale53 - I use the FBI load in my 642-1. Buffalo Bore brand.
I read a long time ago that S&W sets the fixed rear sights on J Frames
using 158-Gr.

I called S&W and they said the warning only applied to magnum rounds. FWIW mine is loaded w/110 grain +P hollow points and the gun handles them w/o any problems/

Zombie be dammmmed. Same topic.
It's not the light bullet !!!!!!
It's the EXTRA powder to get a light bullet going that causes the heat and the frame damage.

Light bullet takes More powder to get the same velocity as a heavy bullet
Every handloader knows this.

I've had a 360PD for a dozen years and I shoot 357mag. It is the worst range toy ever made, but the best light carry ever invented. I hate it and I love it. If you only have one gun and this is it, you are in trouble.

It's for Emergencies Only! If it's a real emergency, you will not feel any recoil at all. Ask me how I know.

Prescut

Default The 120gr warning is only for Magnum rounds.

I’m the manual it says that the 120gr warning is only for Magnum rounds. Here is a picture of that page: http://smith-wessonforum.com/attachm...1&d=1687207163
