Hey "Murphydog" (Alan), ...thanks for the help. Much appreciated!
You are correct, No Pin.

Penmon.... Your reply of 1977 is far off from "Murphydog" (above reply)
Could one of you clarify this difference? Thanks for your feedback anyway! G.P.
The serial number corresponds to a gun that was shipped in 1983.Numbers 17D8901-21D0883 were made in 1983
However the 10-7 became the 10-8 in 1977 according to the S&W book. The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Supica & Nahas show the 10-7 was only made in the first part of 1977.
In 1981 the S&W logo was moved to the left side to facilitate sideplate engraving for special police orders.Still called the 10-8
In 1982 the pinned barrel was eliminate and they started 3-letter serial prefix, like yours.
The 10-8 was made until 1988 at that time in became the 10-9.
Not knowing your barrel was not pinned and since the 10-7 was only made for one year, 1977 I assumed it was a 1977 gun.
I originally missed the part about the 3-letter prefix number in your case 20D-32XX.
So part of your gun was born in 1977 as a 10-7 (The Frame) and the entire gun was shipped and probably assembled in 1983.
This last part of course is total guesswork.
