Question on Stock wood species - Finally a Picture
Did S&W ever make presentation stocks from cherry? I've been going thru and cataloging my stocks and have come across a set, mid '80s most likely, LFC, silver washer that are not walnut, are not GA nor do I think they are rosewood. Lite color, dense grain, very beautifully bookmatched. These are unlike anyothers in my stash. Not marked in any way as to date or any other markings you sometime see.

Checkered or smooth?
Is there a cut out on BOTH panels of the stocks?
A photo might help...

It's too bad you don't have a picture.
I have never heard of a set of cherry S&W factory stocks, but the description could be Goncalo Alves, since GA stocks certainly came in a huge variety of color and grain types.
When I was a young fellow, my Dad was a big admirer of cherry and favored it for everything wood around the house. One time I asked him about cherry and possibly making a set of pistol stocks from it. His comment was that it wouldn't be any good for that. I did not inquire further as to why not.
Being one of the fruit woods, I am not certain cherry would be good for a gun stock, though I believe it was not uncommon in inlays. My Great Grandfather used it in a chess/checkers board that I still have somewhere. In combination with bleached maple for the light-colored squares, it made a very interesting piece.

Smooth presentations, LFB on left panel. The kids are over right now but I will get pics up a bit later, I've done a bit of woodworking and these sure look like cherry heartwood, if it's GA it's some of the lightest, most uniform color I've ever seen. I've got about 60 sets of stocks and these are unlike anything else in the bunch.

I recently had a conversation with one of our grip experts and he was telling me that S&W did make some stocks in cherry. He has a set but I have not seen them yet. Maybe he'll see this and chime in.

I hope so. Those would be fun to see. Cherry seems to come and go in popularity. It would not surprise me if some had been made at some point.

bama - hardly an expert but I do like wood stocks and have collected them for a while now..
I can't supply a picture because I sold them.
They were checkered, k frame, football targets from the 70's with silver washers.
The inside of the right panel was stamped:
KT CH R.H.
They were actually pretty plain but had a redish/pinkish tint.

Hard to tell w/o seeing them in the flesh, but from my 40 years as a woodworker and furniture maker, I'll say they are cherry.

Sorry about the delay in getting these up, I had to help dig up my parents septic tank, not a fun visit I'm here to tell 'ya.
This pic was taken with indoor lighting so isn't the best but the coloration and grain pattern don't look like any GA I've ever seen.
I know cherry darkens with exposure to light, these have been kept in a box since I acquired them.
I'm not certain but I think these may have been refinishied, i can't recall, but that wouldn't affect the grain pattern.
