I blame all of you for my addiction to the 44 special. What with your excellent photographs and shooting stories I just didn't have a chance to resist. My first one was a 624 with the 6.5" bbl followed by the 3" 24-3 and last was the 4" 24-3. Got so my wife started going to the shows to keep me in check with my quest for 44 specials. Caught me red handed getting the 3" one and downhill from then on.

I might add that my Ruger Redhawk from which I have shot many times 50 and 100 rounds at a session is now quietly pining away in the safe after my getting the 624 with the 6.5" barrel. The 624 shooting the Winchester 200 grain silvertip bullet is almost like shooting a 38 special without all the bang, and recoil. The stock factory wood grips were quickly replaced with a set of Pachmayer de-accelerator grips. No more bruised finger. No such story to relate with the 44 special. Frank

Very nice! That kind of answers the original question too.
Only the (relatively) newest one I have (a 696-1) achieves a .429 throat and bore.
I suspected that if you went back far enough one would encounter the proper specs to account for the legendary performance.
I am still looking for the real story of why S&W (and others for that matter) made the 44 throats and bores larger and larger till they reached .433 in the mid 1980's.
All 3 624's have throats about that size and my Redhawk from that era is .432.
Then slowly the throats and bores miraculously get smaller over the next 20 years till we are back to where they should have been all along.

Properly loading cast bullets .433 is not completely straightforward.
I have ended up with 3 different expander stems of increasing size to match the 3 different bullet diameters I stock.
As it turns out the microgroove 444 also likes those big bullets.

I guess I shouldn't gripe too much however as the 45 folks have seen bore diameters all over the map since the beginning.

It's the tapered barrel, I tell ya! The tapered barrel!

To me the 24 is just about perfect in its proportions. I have never met one I didn't like.

You folks are a bad influence. I was already to purchase a mint Model 29-2 4” blued for a fair price to shoot .44 specials in as I don’t care about shooting .44 mags. And then I come across this post and you have drawn me to the tappered barrels of a Model 24. So I have posted an ad in the Wanted Classified and am searching the internet for a blued 4” 24-2 or 3. Thanks for the enlightenment or addiction!

Wait until you start to get into the Lew Horton 3" versions... Then you'll need a "sponsor" to keep you in check!

Not an M24... But my beloved M29-3 Lew Horton Special sure gets it's fair amount of .44Specials thru her. Underwood's 255gr Hard Cast "Keith's" are it's favorite loads! I got it as a result of losing out on 3 separate M24 Lew Horton's on GunBroker. I'm really glad I lost those bids but won this one as .44Spec and .44Magnum are now both my favorite caliber(s) with a slight edge going to the Mag.

In regard to the shortage of Model 24’s compared to Model 29’s does any body know a smith that can replace the barrel and cylinder on a 29 with a tappered Model 24 .44 special barrel and .44 cylinder and how much that would cost. Is this a mistake in changing a 29 like this.
Thanks
Jeff

Sure, that's a piece of cake. But do you have a barrel and cyl? You may find it harder to come up with them than a Mod 24.

We see Mod 24s change hands regularly. Just go on "the hunt". You'll find what you want.

There is a never fired still in grease and box Model 24-3 blued with 4” barrel on Gun Broker at $1500 to $1600. Is this a fair price. Is it a shame to buy this and shoot it? It’s more than I want to spend but just questioning it. If anybody is interested in it go ahead and get it.

Thanks
Jeff

Default Specials in 44S&W Spl

"Other than 44 specials are cool, and
you have to clean a 44 magnum more
when shooting specials out of it, what
reasons would you give for owning a Model 24?"

Resurrection of a Great Topic.

I don't and never have shot 44Spl
in my 44Mags, I just don't.

I just like the 44S&W Special, always have.
I shoot mine a lot, and like to Reload them.

A lot of Shooters just don't pay attention,
over look them (IMHO because of the 44Mag
/44Spl purpose) and that's makes it good for
me.

Some of mine below. S&W 696 3"bbl, Uberti
Bisley, USFA Flat Top, and USFA Bisley (Unfired
Art).

I have read " I never fire 44 spl's " in my 44 mag gun . I wonder how much 38 special ammunition has been fired out of 357 magnum revolvers ? I have often thought I wanted a 44 spl Smith , preferable a 24 in 4" barrel . But at the end of the day I will always find my self reaching for either my Smith 29 , 4" barrel or my Smith 25 ( 45Colt) 4" barrel . So I have decided I don't really need another gun . I just prefer to shoot more the guns that I have . I have shot 44 spl's out of my 29 or I loaded just a nice fairly mild 44 magnum load in my 29 using 700X powder . When I compare 44 spl to 45 Colt , I'm on the " other side " as I choose my Smith 25 in 45 Colt . This post is not about " which is better " ? Just my preference . Regards, Paul

I've had 2 29s over the decades, and as I recall, I never put one round of 44 magnum ammo thru either. Might just as well have had 24s.

Let me chime in with a perspective I have not seen elsewhere here.
I am basically a bullseye shooter. I learned the fundamentals that way and primarily compete that way. Handguns used to be designed and built around the ideals of that discipline.
The 6&1/2" barrel S&W 44 Special has an unmatched balance, handling and accuracy in a one-hand big bore revolver. (OK, the 38/44 Outdoorsman is right up there, too!). Doesn't matter which flavor: 1950 Target, Triple Lock, M24, etc.... All good!
The 4" 44 Special is nice, too, especially for packing. But, on the range or in the field, I love the way the front sight hangs on target, the clean break of that perfect trigger, the warm push of just the right amount of recoil, and.....whack! That big bullet nails it!
Yeah, I Love the M29, too. But, the balance and handling are better with the Special, especially if you are under the pressure of a match.
But why choose? Get both!

Best Regards,
Jim

Why own a Model 24?
.44 Special.
End of story.

It's kind of like asking why own a model 14 or 15 when you can get a 19 and shoot Specials and Magnums.
Because (to me) the 14 and 15 look better, and I like .38 revolvers.
Plus, I shoot a LOT more .38 and .44 Special than .357 and .44 Magnum ammo.

It's as though some people think there's something inherently wrong with the Specials that only a Magnum can fix.

For me, I prefer the barrel taper of the 15 and 24 to the 19 and 29.

It would be a shame NOT to shoot it.
S&W made them to be shot a lot.
Safe queens are fine for collectors. I have no problem with them.
But, I like to shoot a lot. And, I like to shoot beautiful guns just as much as guns with finish issues.

This is the first five shots fired at 25 meters on the International Standard Pistol Target. Sights not adjusted. Standing, one hand.
4.5 gr bullseye with a cast wadcutter out of a very old Lyman 429348 mold.
Pre Model 24.

I love my 4" 24-3, probably one of the best I have. I see the 44 special like the 28 gauge shotgun. Without going overboard on reloading it, it will do 80% or so of the bigger calibers, with half the recoil, making it twice as fun..

Model 24's, 624's and pre 24's are just plain cool. No other reason to own one (or more) needed!

I don’t get the attraction...at least in the 4” length. The 629 mountain gun does all a 4” 24 will do and then some.

Interesting posts and very informative.I understand the balance difference between the 29/629 and the 24/624.I do notice no one has compared the 4.25 M69 and the 24/624.For those that have both, what is your opinion of the balance difference between the two?

I have had several 29's and 629's including the mountain gun. I just download my plinking ammo to 44 special specs and have the option of going with more power if desired. I don't get it either.

Sometimes it has nothing to do with making sense.

Exactly.
From a practical point of view, a .44 magnum is the logical choice due to the versatility. And maybe your budget is limited...whatever. A .44 magnum makes a lot of sense for the buyer looking to get the most for their money.

But the .44 special is such a good cartridge.
It justifies a gun chambered for it alone.
I own a few examples of the model 24. They are excellent guns and among the favorites in my modest collection of S&W revolvers.

By way of analogy, back in the 60's Ford and Carroll Shelby produced a GT350 and a GT500. The GT350 had a small block engine and was lighter and arguably more agile than the GT500. The GT500 was heavier due to its big block engine. Faster in a straight line but it was a lesser road course car than the GT350. I see the 44 Special and the 44 Magnum in the same light.

A nice model 24 is just a classy revolver. I like owning firearms most other folks don't have.

One could make the argument that the better lesson would be to clean your firearms more thoroughly. If you let them sit around dirty, well - they’re machines. Regular maintenance tends to help them work correctly.

There is no “rational” reason. Ammo isn’t always easy to find, other calibers can match it, etc.

However, for me, it’s the pride of owning a 24-3 snubby; a true classic, well built revolver in a man stopping caliber, that isn’t available in this configuration from the factory anymore.

I won’t sell my M24; it’ll go to my kids or grandkids first ( along with my 16 ga SXS)

Why own the 44 special as opposed to the 44magnun ? The special has a certain charm that the magnums don't have . The lines of the gun , the softer recoil and the accuracy of the round are the perfect combination . Those that ask do not know and those that denigrate this round will never understand .

I lost 3 bids in a row on (3) separate Lew Horton M24's within hours of the auction ending on GunBroker... I finally was blessed with an M29-3 Lew Horton that I won the final bid with and I've shot a heck of a lot of .44Special's out of her... and a heck of a lot of .44magnums out of her. The .44Special/.44Magnum are my favorite handgun caliber(s) superceeding the previous reigning champ, the .45ACP/.45Super; of which I thought could never happen. The option to shoot both calibers is a lovely thing even though I see exactly what you are saying.

My M29-3 (LHS)...

I’m pro 44 Special, just not a pro 44 Special only revolver. I don’t feel like I’m giving up accuracy shooting 44 Special in my 629.

A friend of mine got a 3 inch Model 24 back in the '80's with the round butt combats on it. I remember that he just stuffed it in his back pocket when he headed out to his truck with those now very expensive grips hanging out.

Sometimes you find a neat, rare gun and learn to love it later. That's how it was with my 624. I knew plenty about the Lew Horton snubs from this very forum. Quite honestly, I really had my eye out for a 629 or 657 and just stumbled into this one. It's now a favorite shooter.

I'm assuming the Revo you speak of is a "Lew Horton Special..." If that is the case... then absolutely the answer is yes (if at the end of the auction rounds out at $1500); because this is the Premium a "Lew Horton Special" gun commands at current time(s). I lost 3 bids in a row on GB after being the high bidder for 4-5 days. Then just hours before the auction is to end "scumbag(s)", just kidding... kinda... He bid the price threshold up to the point that would exceed $1800+ should I had got into a bidding war. That is when I bid on an M29-3 Lew Horton Special that I could shoot both .44Special and .44Magnums out of. It is a 90% condition gun and the bid war got a little ugly; again, the last 6-7 hours but I was blessed to be the high bidder at End of Auction... right at $1600 was the final cost after shipping, the 3% credit card fee, and FFL fee.

So to answer you question... if you really want a nice .44Special; if you can get it out the door for $1600 on GB then yes, you stole it especially if it's Minty AND it in fact is a true Lew Horton Special.

The 3" rd butt is the LH spl, the 4" sq butt is regular production.

$1600 is pretty strong for an unfired 1980s .44 Special...but in 2-3 years we probably won't think so.

While I agree with everything said so far, The difference is really something you need to experience for yourself. Only after you've fired a Model 24 will the light come on and you'll finally "get it".
I own one .44 magnum revolver. A 6" Model 29-8 that was left to me when a dear friend passed away. I love the gun due to its ties to my friend. But honestly, I never would have bought a .44 Magnum myself. I just don't care for all the buck and roar.
However, I do own seven .44 Specials. including all three barrel lengths of the Model 24-3. I love this cartridge and the guns that shoot it. To me they are very special indeed.

I own a 24-3. Now, don't hate me. The only reason I bought it, used, in 1992 was to have it converted to 45LC. Back then used Model 25's in .45LC were hard to find. I wanted a project gun. Something just for fun. I located a gunsmith willing to do the conversion and I gave him the 24-3 and an unfluted .45LC cylinder I bought from Numrich Gun Parts. He installed a 5" bull barrel and an optic sight. I recently updated the old Aimpoint sight to a Burris Fastfire III.

The recoil is like a .38 Special due to the weight of the barrel. I get asked if it's a .38 and people are surprised when I tell them it's .45 Colt. It's great fun shooting out the center of a target.

So, technically I do own a 24-3. Well, sort of. Just don't hate me.
