How do you want to carry? Concealed or open? Strong side or crossdraw? Strap or tension design? Barrel length?

I bought a leather Tagua from ebay for 686 snub , Midway USA is a good source. Big 686 will need a heavy belt and maybe suspenders.

Get a good belt to go with the holster. jbtrucker is right. For me a Kramer Horsehide would be my choice. Have to wait, but you get to spec it out the way you want it and it will last for decades. He makes pretty good belts too. For instant gratification, I suggest a Bianchi or Galco holster and a Beltman ready made belt. I'm partial to a pancake style myself.

Links aren't my strong suit. Google Bianchi and Galco and you'll get there. Also if you go that route look around. Other places may have one of those for less that the official site. Remember to check belt width to make sure it will work. Kramer will come up on google too. Maybe get a holster for now while you wait on a custom holster. With the fact that their horshide will last you decades, I think it's $150 and 10 -16 weeks well spent. Also check out Lobo Gunleather, El Paso Saddlery, Ken Null and Mitch Rosen.

I just ordered a Desantis from Midway for a 3” Kimber K6 in 357, about $54 or so. I like widely spaced loops to spread the weight, with heavier guns. I wanted a retention strap, mostly woods carry, possibly cooler weather CC. Rooting around the woods I like a secure carry, even in a canoe at times.

I tried a few of the holsters I already have, never found a fit I liked. I have done used on eBay some, not many for this 3” Kimber. I plan mostly 38 SPCL +p area with loads.

The rig you linked gives you the option of front or rear cant. Another one that does that with aplomb is Simply Rugged. I just ordered another one for my snubbie 627.

I like a Milt Sparks 1¾" belt. Just ordered a new one of those, too.

No matter which holster you get, get the loops the same size as your belt. Nothing worse than a 1¾" loop on a smaller belt -- terribly sloppy.

I wear "Hold Up" Contractor suspenders to keep everything in its place.

Plain and simple, it is not a fashion show. Functional, secure and ready. I went with an old S&W leather. Gun stores have bargain binds of all kinds of stuff. No need for a $120 holster unless that's what you want. See mind.

Ok, who amongst frequent holster wearers doesn't have a box full of versions that you didn't find quite to your liking? (Or the equivalent number of holsters that you sent down the road?) Plus the box of holsters which get used for specific duties, but not others?

I was about to post every revolver needs an OWB leather holster.
I myself have a Galco i purchased years ago for half the price they are going for now. Its a great holster for outdoor work/ hikes

Edit: Equally as important as a good holster is a good stiff gunbelt. Makes that gun much more comfortable to wear without sag. I would highly recommend a steel liner in the belt.

Just a FYI: If you choose a highly boned leather rig, make sure that you specify whether your gun is a 686 or a 686+. The flutes are in a different place on the 7-shooter.

Adios,

For my 686+ 6" I got an AE Nelson strong side/crossdraw w/ thumb break. It's not much of a concealment holster, even for a 4".
I also have an X15 Bianchi vertical shoulder holster for grins and giggles if I should ever want to conceal it under the trench coat I don't have yet...

4" Revolvers are pretty long, high riding holsters are a challenge to draw from. And especially make sure you've got your reholstering planed out so that you don't point the muzzle towards you as you are trying to reholster. Pancakes are going to conceal amongst the best, but can be a challenge for some people... I would want one that has the cylinder close to belt level and maybe the front cut away a bit so to ease the draw. Lots of makers out there, lots of suggestions here already.
I like TT holsters real well...

Good luck!

Take a look at the Milt Sparks PMK. I love mine but it’s for a snubby. I assume it would be good for a 686.
