Chad nailed it for you. S&W has been making the .38 Special M&P since 1899, and it has gone through a lot of incremental improvements and adjustments. It became known as the Model 10 in 1957 when the company adopted numerical designations for models that were previously known by names and descriptions. Subsequent minor modifications to the design or engineering are represented by dash numbers. When your gun was made the company called it the 10-8.
Including its predecessors and more recent variants, the Model 10 has been a fine revolver for over a century. It is S&W's best selling line, with millions made over the decades.
