I've owned several unfluted cylinder guns. This Freedom Arms is the only one I currently have; 454 and 45 ACP unfluted cylinders....

Default Two-Tone Hunter (2008), Rast & Gasser (1916)

Smith & Wesson Model 629-6 "Two-Tone Hunter," circa 2008. Various special features, including ball detent lock-up and detachable barrel weights.

And, a distant antecedent -- a Rast & Gasser Model of 1898. This particular example of the Austrian revolver was manufactured in or about 1916. The "ML" stamped into the cylinder designates that the cylinder (and perhaps the barrel?) is made from molybdan legierung, a then-new molybdenum alloy, said to have been used starting in 1916.

Default Revolvers without flutes?

While these are nice looking guns--especially the snubbies--my own preference is to have flutes on the cylinder of any revolver that I carry because the flutes help me index the speed loader.

This may have already been mentioned in this somewhat older thread (maybe even by me) but preferences for or against flutes are hard to figure. In revolvers, unfluted cylinders (actually, that should be non-fluted as unfluted suggests flutes were once present but were removed) are less common so they are considered "higher-grade" by some people. Rifle barrels, other other hand, usually are non-fluted (fluteless?) so flutes are popular on custom barrels and more costly rifles and are becoming more common on many standard production rifles.

Beauty still is in the eye of the beholder and no one will ever get a firm grasp on the buying public's preferences.

Ed

I can't hardly get enough of these. Unfortunately, it's looking more and more lately I'll have to sell the house to be able to get a 3" 629-4, no flutes, no polish, no ports and no goofy pictures engraved. Man...life can be hard for the fussy.

Talking sorry, I can't oblige

Got rid of my last un-fluted, a 627-0 last spring. Traded it for a 16-4. I don't like the extra cylinder mass for DA shooting!

This used to be a 24-3, 44 Special. I bought an unfluted 45LC cylinder and had a gunsmith install a bull barrel. I added Wolff springs and a wide, smooth trigger and Miculek grips. Originally it had an Aimpoint sight, but I recently swapped it out for a Burris Fastfire III.

629-5 Performance Center. I’m not sure which one as the previous owner swapped in a 4 inch barrel. Great online auction find. I installed a tritium front sight and a C&S fixed rear sight with the newer grips.
