Default Finally found a pre-lock 2 1/2-inch 686 7-shot

Walking through the gun show today looking for a holster for a Taurus and there she was. A snubby 686-4, 7-round, no lock, in great condition and at a price that I could live with. I had to have it. Tried to find a holster for it without success. Still, I'm happier than a pig in slop.

Lousy photo - the blemishes are fingersprints. Thanks for looking.

Yep, it's a beauty, been looking for one of those myself. But I don't care if it's lock or pre-lock...

Thanks for the replies.

Saw three 686 2 1/2-inch 7-shot with locks at the show. They seemed relatively abundant compared to the no lock version - mine was the only one.

Yep, overpriced for me... I'd be jumping all over one if I can find it in the 450-500 range.. I try to buy when I can find a price below average retail...

I would LOVE to own a pre-lock 7 shot! I have seen a couple but the owners are very proud of them and since I have a 686-1 2 1/2" six shooter and 4 other .357 snubbies it is hard for me to buy this great gun in front of some of my other "wish list" guns. So many guns...limited gun fund. Great grab for you! Happy shooting!

no doubt Joe, but when it might come in to port, I'll be on the dock... I've done ok with most of my purchases, just got to be in the right place at the right time.. I picked up a new 686 6" CUSTOM FOR around $500 THAT WAS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS.. I think I posted pics here somewhere....

Although I carry a 66 snub...

That exact model 686 is one that I would love to have!

The pre-lock 7 shot is hard to find.

Thanks for sharing!

Does anyone know how long the 7- shot 2 1/2-inch barrel 686 pre-lock was made. I think this one dates to 1997. Thanks!

Outstanding gun!

You just can't go wrong with a 686-4. IMHO, the -4 is the pinnacle of the 686, it's the high point of pre-lock, pre-MIM.

IIRC the 7-shot 686-4's were only made in 96-97. Then they went to the 686-5+. Regards 18DAI

I don't have my S&N book with me right now. But I was researching this same issue recently when I picked up my 686-4 PLUS, 4". So I'll defer to the experts - but as I recall, it was just a short time.

Thanks for the replies! Only produced for Two years? No wonder I never see them.

On another note, can I use moon clips with this revolver? Thanks!

Collect them all... if you can!

The 6" Cost - $399.95 (2-1996)
The 4" Cost - $700 (6-2016)
The 2.5" Cost - $299.95 (12-1996)

The 586-7 Cost - $800 (3-2014)

They will never get cheaper.

Oh yea this one too. Cost $933.25 2016

I'm done here.

Congratulations to you sir. You found a fine gun at a fair price

Every time I come here I learn something. I didn't even know there was a 7 shooter, pre lock 686-4! I'm happy with my 2.5 inch 686 no dash so I won't be in the market for one, but if one happens my way I'm sure not going to turn my back on it.

THE 6" 686 SEEMS TO BE THE MOST INEXPENSIVE BARREL VARIANT THAT I HAVE COME ACROSS. I AM SEARCHING FOR A PRE-LOCK 2 1/2" M686. IT IS NOT UNUSUAL TO SEE THEM AT NORTH OF $800. I ALREADY HAVE A 4" MOUNTAIN GUN, A 2 1/2" NO-DASH, AND AN 8 3/8" NO DASH. I ROUTINELY SEE 6" VARIANTS FOR LESS THAN WHAT I PAID FOR ANY OF THE 3 THAT I OWN...

OF COURSE, THAT IS JUST MY EXPERIENCE.. YOURS MAY HAVE BEEN QUITE DIFFERENT .....

THE OTHER THING THAT I SHOULD POINT OUT IS THAT I ONLY LOOK AT PRE-LOCK REVOLVERS. CURRENT PRODUCTION GUNS WITH LOCKS ARE DEFINITELY LESS EXPENSIVE THAN NICE PRE-LOCK EXAMPLES OF THE SAME VARIANT.......
