Mdl 27-2 vs. Mdl 60-7 Fair Trade?
I hope this is posted in the correct area.
This involves a proposed trade between a Model 27-2 with a four inch barrel and a Model 60-4 Lady Smith.
The Model 27-2 is about 75-85 % blue remaining, Pachmayr grips, target hammer and trigger, good and tight, no box or docs.
The Lady Smith is near new, probably has original wood grips with S&W inserts, fired very little. I don't know if it has the box and docs or not. How would that affect the trade?
The offer is a straight trade. I have not seen the gun so, obviously, I would verify the preceding before trading.
He wants something bigger since he has difficulty with the little Lady Smith. He handled the Model 27 and liked the feel. He offered a straight trade. Normally a Model 27-2 4-inch would go for a lot more money, I think. However, considering the difference in condition would this make them about equal in a trade?
So far communication has been by phone. Before we meet, which will involve driving out of town, I would appreciate your thoughts.
What do you pros think?
Thanks,
Bill
PS Would the Model 60-4 have the 1 7/8 inch barrel or the longer 2 1/2 Inch barrel?

It depends on what you want. I would supect the 27-2 would sell for over $500, where as the 60-4 would sell for under $500. Personally, I wouldn't trade, but if the model 60 is what you want, than go for it.
The better option would be to sell the 27-2 and buy the gun you want with the money.
Shoot, I've got a LNIB 642 Pro in the FS section I'd gladly trade you for your 27.

Thanks for that good advice. I don't particular want the 60-4 unless it has the longer barrel. That 1 7/8 inch barrel is too short for my old eyes. I was thinking of selling the Model 27-2 locally and would be asking less than $500 so your information is really great to learn.
Thanks and Merry Christmas,
Bill

Something doesn't sound right. the model 60-4 wasn't a Ladysmith.
It is a .38 special & has a 3' full underluged barrel and adjustable sights.I have 2 of them and wouldn't part with either!!
If I had a model 27 in 4",it wouldn't go either.

Well other then it's a 4 inch Model 27-2 nothing sounds very attractive about it having only 85% of its original finish and its wearing rubber grips so I'd say trade it for whatever you think is of equal value.
I'm saying that because a revolver in that condition is well into the shooter only grade to me so its value is greatly diminished.

Which one will you be shooting and using the most often? A nice reblue on that 27 would bring it back to its former beauty for a couple hundred bucks and you have one of the most desirable S&W's ever made.
I'd personally NEVER trade a 27 in yours condition for a model 60! JMO.

GaGunner 2,
I have not seen it, only spoken with the man about it. Over the years I do seem to recall seeing what look liked a gussied up Model 60 with service sights, fancy grips, and Lady Smith written on the side. But I could be wrong on that score.
Thanks,
Bill

Unless you had a burning desire for that Model 60, I think that you did the right thing. There's just something about a 27 like yours,be it the heavy duty, man size appeal of it,the target features, the barrel length, that makes it a comfortable old friend that should stick around, even if it isn't in prime cosmetic condition. The Pachs can be changed out anytime you wish,if wood is your thing.

Whew!! Had me worried there for while. Unless you had a specific need for the ladysmith, I think you did the right thing.

Camster and Iggy,
Thanks for the encouraging words.
Camster,
Even though I have a Model 686 that shoots and handles like a dream and I have no real need for the 27, still I am sure I would have wished I had it back had I traded. I agree with you about the handling characteristic of the 4-Inch Model 27. It has a certain appeal that can’t be fully quantified. I still might trade or sell it but I am no longer tempted to practically give it away thanks to you folks on the forum.
Iggy,
Thanks to you and the other forum members for helping me get my head on straight. The man initially told me he had a Lady Smith he wanted to trade. I thought it might be the Model 65 which I was interested in. Turns out, it is the J-Frame. My interest ebbed at that point. I must confess I am not thrilled about carrying a gun that has “Lady” written on it but I do like the slicked action and barrel lug on the Model 65 version.
Again thanks to everyone.
