Glock Guy just Bought a S&W .357 Any Info?

Just picked this up TODAY! I have always been a Glock fanatic, but couldn't pass up this deal. I think I got this for a great price. I have NO idea what it is worth, or even the technical name other than its a .357 Magnum.

Any info would be GREATLY appreciated!

Congratulations, you have a Model 686 with a 6" barrel. What submodel I can't say, but if you look inside the crane (the part that swings out with the cylinder) on the left hand side near the serial number you'll see 686, 686-1, etc. These are widely admired, hell-for-stout guns made specifically for shooting lots of full-house .357 magnum loads. They can be anything from respectably to incredibly accurate. Don't know what the list is on them, but new they're selling for around $700 at the shops around here.

That gun appears to be a 686-4 (the rear sight looks to be the 'new style' one with the shorter, rounded tang). For sure, it's got the color-case hardened forged hammer and trigger (which preclude it from being a 686-5 or later with their MIM parts), which were used on the stainless 686s around the end of the 686-3s and beginning with the 686-4s. Very nice - it should be worth around $550-$600 without the box, closer to $700 with everything and in excellent condition.

You're going to love it. I have several Glock's myself and got involved fairly recently with revolvers after taking my dad to the range and shooting his. They are very addicting and the more you learn the more you want.

In other words this site is the gateway drug to revolvers, at least for me it has been. Bunch of great guys here with a ton of knowledge and you won't have to read about the same Glock mod or brass to the forehead story that has become overplayed on the Glock sites.

Not to mention that the good ole wheel-gun goes bang every time you pull the trigger. Even if it doesn't - just keep pullin.

Very nice find. Wear plenty of hearing protection as 357 Mag has a real crack of a report. Was deaf for weeks after shooting several wheels without muffs years ago when I didn't think I'd be around long enough to worry about hearing loss.

Welcome to the fraternity.
Many of us regard the -4 as the finest of the 686 line.
Another plus is that its factory-ready for a scope or other optic as its been drilled and tapped under the rear sight.

If you haven't shot magnums before, might I suggest starting with some .38 Special loads and get a feel for the gun before you open up with full house .357's. Many people open up with full bore loads and develop some bad habits from the start. Besides .38's are fun and less expensive.

Unless you need the power, shoot 38 Specials in it. I have 4 each revolvers that can shoot 357 Magnums at the moment. The wifes 686-1 House Gun is loaded with Mid Level 357's, and I carry 357's in my 3" Model 66 concealed carry gun. I shoot 38 Specials in them for practice, and lots of them. I have a 686-5 that has not had a 357 Magnum shot in it since it was test fired at the factory. It very likely may never have another round of 357 Magnum shot in it while I own it. I got it as my new SSR Gun, and to shoot our Clubs Steel Challange matches with.
For plinking and target shooting you will find out that 38 Specials are a lot more fun to shoot in it.
Value: Used in my area $550 - $600. New around $700
Note: Considered my most on this site to be better than a new one.
Modifications: You could have a trigger job done to it, if you plan to shoot it double action. If you are going to shoot it Single Action leave it alone.
Issues: The 686-4 is considered to be the Most Desirable of the 686's.

YOU GUYS WERE NOT KIDDING! I just found another GREAT deal I couldn't pass up. I have not even shot the first one before I bought a SECOND! I got the 686-4 for $340, and the 686 no dash for $350.

This one is the 686 No Dash. It does NOT have the M stamp that I have read about, and don't plan on sending it in. It has a serial number of ABCXXXX. I don't know if this is any more valuable, but I just got it from a guy that said he had it for over 25 years! I can't wait till the weekend!

Good buys "Glock Guy",I have a Glock 17 that I enjoy and love to shoot, but how cool is a six shooter. I have always been a J frame guy for my carry gun but just bought a M64 4 inch K frame, you are going to love your wheel guns.

Thanks! I have never shot an M&P before. My first gun purchase ever when i turned 21 was a Bryco .380. Worst......mistake......ever........ After about 500 rounds the barrel split, and I went straight to the gun show and bought my first Glock 17. I was so amazed at how much more reliable it was compared to the Bryco that I didnt think it could get any better!

I've owned Glocks myself and felt they were very good pistols. The M&P however is definitely a step up in fit and shootability. They are superb pistols. The S&W revolvers are also great handguns and I prefer them over anything else. If I were to carry a semi-auto, it would probably be an M&P or a 1911.
